First Time Cruisers Sailing the Sky 7/23 Concerned!!!

Just some quick questions... There is a tropical storm heading towards Miami, should we be concerned our trip will get cancelled or if it does sail, should we be worried about rough seas?? Has anyone encountered rough seas that has any advice on how to be prepared? We have bought the patch will it help at all? Or am I being to paranoid being this is our fisrt cruise...Thanks in advance for any responses

We have encountered rough seas before, but have (luckily) never been seasick. We take something (Bonine) just in case on every cruise, but we have never had to use it. If you are worried, take something with you - and you could also take ginger pills, starting a couple of days before the trip. You can get them at a health food store. Our first cruise was also during hurricane season - but cruises are rarely cancelled due to storms. They may, however, choose to change itinerary - so you may not get to stop at the ports you thought you were going to visit!

Cruises are VERY rarely cancelled due to a storm. The cruise line would literally loose millions of dollars. They may however change the itinerary by going a different route, changing ports, or just skipping an effected port. Ships have very spohisticated weather radars and they can sail around storms.

I've sailed several times during prime hurricane season. For the most part, captains are experts at steering around storms, so it's possible to encounter glassy smooth seas. It's also possible, though, to encounter some rough seas, and like the above poster said, we've always found that Bonine (generic ingredient: meclizine) works great as a preventative to sea sickness. If you wait till you're already sick, it'll be too late!

 

Keep an open mind about going to ports different from those you thought you were going to, and you'll have a great cruise!

If at all concerned, take bonine. Start the night before the cruise, and my wife then takes it twice a day during the cruise. It's non prescription at most drug stores. As the other post says, start before it happens. She takes it on all cruises as a precaution even if smooth sailing is foercast.

First lets be clear....there is not a tropical storm heading towards Miami.

 

There is a tropical low which is just a bunch of thunderstorms. It may grow into a Tropical Depression today but that is NOT a big deal. Tropical storms must have winds at a constant 39mph.

 

Will the Tropical Low (bunch of Thunderstorms) effect your cruise? Most likely. Will it be canceled? Unless it grew into a hurricane, NOT likely.

 

You will have rough seas if the winds are blowing that direction. You may encounter a lot of rain. Great Stirrup Cay will be bypassed if it is too rough to anchor out and tender. That happens with just a regular breezy day.

 

Yes this may put a damper on your cruise, but the cruise line will continue to go out.

 

As others have said the captain will make decissions based on the current weather at time of sailing to reroute or bypass islands.

Motioneaze works well. It does not make you drowsy. You can buy it at Walmart or any major drugstore. It is a little pricey.

 

It is a liquid and you put one drop behind each ear. It also works well in making you feel better if you are already sick. We learned about this from the divemaster at our local dive shop. They use it to help folks that get seasick on their dive boats. We have used it several times and did not get seasick. The last two cruises we encountered very rough seas. We sailed from Bayonne in Jan 08 and had 30 ft seas and were fine.

we sailed on the Sky in June and had terrible thunderstorms as we left Miami. It was really neat to watch... tons of lightning and thunder and strong rain. And I didn't feel a thing in terms of the boat rocking. The lightning lasted all night, and the next two days were perfect.... we got to GSC as well and it was really nice. A great cruise.... enjoy!

2:00 advisory has the storm as a tropical depression#3 and turning it into a tropical storm sometime around midnight tonight.

 

There are tropical storm watches up for palmbeach county south now.

 

Good news for you......it will be long gone by the 24th. Any wave caused by the storm would be gone by Monday. The only issue would be if you are flying into Miami tomorrow or Saturday. Airports usally close when winds reach a constant 40mph at the airport.

 

We are regular cruisers and my son gets VERY seasick. We use the patch for him.

As a matter of fact we are flying in tomorrow...we are do to arrive around noon....i have been following the storm on weatherchannel.com they've been giving video updates on the situation every few hours....we do have travel insurance

You said that you had the patch. My suggestion would be to go ahead and use it if you are prone to motion sickness. If not, hold off. In any case, I would not recommend combining the patch and the Bonine that other posters here suggest...one or the other, only.

1) The prescription patch works very well for the members of our family who get motion sickness. The key is to put it on before you start feeling sick. The same is true if you are using over the counter medicines like Bonine.

 

2) Unless the storm is heading straight for Miami and is pretty big, your trip shouldn't be canceled. Depending on the storm, the ship may go to different ports or take a different path and have to change it's hours. A couple of years ago, a hurricane was heading straight for Port Canaveral. Some of the ships due back that day came into Miami instead. The cruise line involved sent a bunch of buses and transported everyone waiting to get onto the next cruise to Miami and then they used the same buses to bring back people who had their cars parked in Canaveral.

 

3) You will not be in any danger. They have great radar, etc. and make sure they stay clear of dangerous storms.

 

4) Have a great trip. We loved our Sky cruise.

The airlines are what you should worry about. Getting there may be half the battle.
