need info on public transport

Recommended Posts

My husband & I will be cruising to cities of New England/Canada. We have looked at the shore excursions available in Newport, Rhode Island and New London/Mystic, CT. Is there reliable local transportation to the Cliff Walk in Newport, and local transport to Mystic from New London?

The major transportation options (train, ferry, bus) all stop in New London, but from there it looks like a cab is your best option. You could take Amtrak from one to the other, but by the time you pay for a cab to the train station, plus the Amtrak fare ($13 this morning), you might as well just take a cab the entire way.

From the www.mystic.org web site, here's the cab info:

TAXI INFO: If you’re coming into New London by train, bus or ferry, you can choose from Harry’s Taxi and Livery Service, Red & White Taxi, LLC 860-443-2255, or Port City Taxi, 860-444-9222. Yellow Cab operates around Mystic 860-536-8888.

I went down to New London to meet face-to-face with someone I met here on CC, when his ship was stopping there. The dock where the cruise ship stops is truly out of the way (I'm pretty sure it's State Pier). If I recall correctly, they had shuttle buses going from the dock to somewhere in New London, but I have no idea whether the passengers had to pay for them or if they were free.

Unfortunately, public transportation is not one of Connecticut's strong points, especially outside of the major cities. It's only about 10 miles from the pier to Mystic, right up Interstate 95, but I don't think there's regular bus service. Even within Mystic, I don't think there are buses, and depending on what you want to see, that could be an issue as well. The Mystic Marinelife Aquarium and a shopping area are right off the highway; Mystic Seaport is about a mile from the highway. And the downtown area of town (with the cute shops and restaurants) is probably about a mile or so further than that.
