Current Smoking Regulation on Cunard in 2010

Ah well, as normal, it appears that certain folk close their ears to such information, as and when it suits.

Hilton and Holiday Inn still offer smoking rooms, as recently of this last week.

Judy

Judy thats nice that Hilton and Holiday inn offer smoking rooms, perhaps Cunard could follow suit then and offer smoking only cabins for the smokers and non-smoking cabins for us non-smokers?

Wait and see now if Cunard follow P&0 and ban smoking from staterooms ...but still allow it on the balcony....

Crikey Rob 6582, you must be very well in with the powers that be to have such contacts.

If you wouldn't mind sharing here, l would be really interested to know the current thoughts on the smoking issue on various lines please.

Thanks in advance

Judy

I am not in with them, I wish i was, I think however Id best ask if I can post a letter or two on here,, the main thing is that many are heading toward the no smoking inside and only outside, but then I guess we already know that

A friend of mine just returned this past weekend from a Princess cruise and this information is still correct.

Thanks cruisegal....I'd been told onboard they had no plans to change this for the foreseeable future.

One thing I did note was a respect for both sides of the issue from passengers. None of that silly arm waving and such. People who didn't smoke stayed away from the smoking areas. And the casino was pretty packed and cranking away on smoking and non smoking nights, possibly because the smoking room is right there in a corner of it.

I hope your friend had a nice time...Princess was a pleasant surprise for us and we bought future cruise credits to go again because it met our expectations so well.

Cheers, Penny

And when this sort of statement was made on here recently on another of these threads I commented that it is very easy to find hotel rooms in the Uk with smoking rooms.

I have 3 hotels booked in different places in the UK for our cruise to Norway before and after, beginning next week. 2 of the 3 have smoking rooms and the only reason I took one without was that the London location was perfect for what we will be doing there for a few days. There was another choice that permitted it but I just loved the looks of this charming boutique hotel too much to pass it up. And I have my E-cigarettes to tide me over in the room at night.:D

Cheers, Penny

I admire your confidence here Gav Boy. However, it really doesn't always work out the way some of you folk wish it to.

Queen Elizabeth 2 was a prime example. I believe you sailed on her many times, as indeed we did for many years from when the grand lady herself was launched.

Those days of course were the good old days and l can never recall any complaints about the dreaded weed then.

Having said that, we did not in those glory days have such sites as Cruise Critic to enable us to air our views....thank the lord.

LibraLass,

The problem here is that Cunard cannot make their minds up with regard to smoking on board their ships.

P&O have obviously made it perfectly clear and that is just wonderful, in as much that one and all know exactly where they stand on this issue.

As far as l am concerned, for the time being, my cruising days have been put on hold.

My money, my choice.

Thank you.

Look how far things have come since QE2, no smoking in any food venues (allowed in Restraunts on QE2 and the Lido), no smoking in the Theatres (allowed in the Grand Lounge on QE2). No smoking in the Golden Lion (allowed in Golden Lion on QE2 and QM2) . No smoking in the Casino`s anymore.

The list goes on.

No definate dates are given, I assume with Princess that it is within weeks, My letter states, Princess, Only allowed on your balcony and some public rooms, it does not state which rooms, P&O is no inside areas at all and Cunard is as we already know, and as of my last voyage last week G32 is still ok on the port side upstairs only, there really is no fuss at all eveyone seems to have accepted it, there was a noticiable smell from churchills, more than I had noticed before and it was mentioned, however churchills was far from busy, so are people giving up or smoking e cigs, I dont know and there there a few times that it was smelt outside of a few cabins.

As we know Rob smoke drifts under and out of doors and up corridors.

Doesn't smoke rise? Upwards, toward the air filtration system---which I believe are located in each cabin and throughout the ship?

The "Princess Cruises" site states...

"Smoking is permitted in staterooms, stateroom balconies, and designated areas

A friend of mine just returned this past weekend from a Princess cruise and this information is still correct.

Ah, what we have here, it would seem, is the usual breakdown in communications between junior shore side staff, what happens on ships and official company policy.

I note, from your quote from your letter, that smoking is to continue on balconies and in some areas (“public rooms”) on board Princess ships exactly as happens now. So no real change from current practice as witnessed a few days ago and explained to passengers recently. The web site says "designated areas" which could, of course, include cabins.

Going back to assumption, I would assume that, although it is not mentioned specifically, pipes will be permitted in Churchills as well as cigars, the word was missed by a shore side copywriter, just an oversight.

And, taking this example, although not mentioned specifically in your letter, smoking will be permitted in Princess cabins as well as balconies, some public rooms and out on deck in certain areas, in line with the current web site guidance. It was just missed by the person who typed your letter but did make it onto the web site which is for far wider consumption and may be legally binding. Again, just an oversight. The Princess site does not mention on-deck smoking areas by name either, but they are there none the less. Errors and oversights do happen.

As for Cunard, I have no answers, just hopes. I hope that room can be found on such large ships for the many smokers. Balconies, selected cabins, outside deck areas, Churchills, G32 (but not Hemispheres; too small), and another space as well, maybe nearer the casinos. And a further hope, for tolerance and understanding.
