Current Smoking Regulation on Cunard in 2010

Since there has been some question about smoking policies on Cunard raised on another thread, I would like to state the chapter and verse as I read the regulation in the large Cunard brochure I have just received --- Cunard Voyages 2011-2012. It is in the chapter "Preparing for your Voyage," and under the section "Frequently Asked Questions," on page 89:

"Smoking is no longer permitted in any of the public rooms with the exception of Churchill's Cigar Lounge and designated areas on the open deck. Smoking will still, however, be allowed in all staterooms and all stateroom balconies. These regulations may be subject to further change in the future [italics added]."

Therefore, it seems that speculation that such regulations will be tightened in late 2010, in order to prohibit all stateroom smoking, is not far-fetched. Until Cunard makes a formal announcement, there is hardly much use in conjecturing or speculating. But it is always good to hear what one hears from staff onboard.

Here is the actual, unedited wording of Cunard's smoking policy as of today [extracted directly from the current on-line FAQ's On Board section]:

"What is the smoking policy on board Cunard ships?

The safety, comfort and enjoyment of all our guests has always been a key concern at Cunard. With this in mind, as a direct result of the feedback we have received from our guests, we have amended our policy with regard to smoking on board Cunard ships. Smoking is no longer permitted in any public area with the exception of Churchill’s Cigar Lounge (cigars only) and designated areas on the open decks. Smoking is permitted on private balconies."

It is interesting that no mention is made of smoking policy in actual private suites/staterooms [only about private balconies].

As an aside, note that Churchill's Cigar Lounge is limited to cigars only.

Except that is already out of date - smoking is now permitted (again) in G32 upper area...

That is exactly the wording contained in a brochure (World Voyages 2012 & Exotic Discoveries) I recieved from Cunard last month with a covering letter dated 2nd July 2010.

perhaps they are having trouble filling the ship.

i just cancelled a 28 night cruise on HAL, largely because they keep cutting down the number of indoor spaces where smoking is allowed.

Another CC on here has posted that smoking ban in ALL cabins (not sure re balconies) comes into force in October 2010 on ALL Cunard ships. His source was an officer on QM2. For those of us who gag at the smell of smoke, let's hope it is true!

Gary---What is your source for this information?

Thanks

Jim

I got friendly with one of the bartenders in the Queens Grill Lounge a couple of years ago - we send eachother the odd email - and she told me, after I enquired if smoking was still allowed in the QGL (its not).

I've scanned the Daily Programme for 29 June 2010--hope the attached picture is legible. It is clearly (in my hard copy at least) stated that "Smoking is allowed in Churchill's Cigar Lounge, the port side upper area of the G32 nightclub and designated areas on the open deck, as well as in staterooms and on all private balconies. Smoking will not be permitted in any other inside area of the ship."

Looks like a standard bit of legalese to me, covering their backs should they decide to do something in the future.

So, party time in G32? Maybe they do read these boards! :D:D:D

The Cunard brochure I picked up today says smoking is allowed in all staterooms and balconies.

In the UK smoking is not allowed inside public places and hotel rooms. P&O have already banned smoking in cabins and only allow now on balconies, and some outside deck space.

As both Cunard and p&o are part of Carnival I am surprised Cunard have not followed p&o and banned smoking from cabins. As non-smokers I don't want to sleep in a cabin previously occupied by 2 heavy smokers in the past 14nights, the curtains, furniture and bed must reek of stale smoke.

If they can't ban smoking in cabins for fear of upsetting the US market, why not smoking and non-smoking cabins?

Hi,

why not ask Captainpugwash as he is onboard QM at the moment.

Taffygirl

I asked the Captain where he got his information from and am afraid its only hearsay from a Officer. Until its official we will assume smoking is allowed in cabins.

The "Princess Cruises" site states...

"Smoking is not allowed in the dining rooms, any food service area, or in the show lounges and theaters. Smoking is permitted in staterooms, stateroom balconies, and designated areas. As a courtesy to your fellow passengers, please refrain from smoking pipes and cigars in all public rooms."

A non-smoking

It is the port side of the G32 for now, I also see the princess ships allow it now only on balconies and a couple of rooms, no where else

G32 has always had excellent ventilation, and if non-smokers sit bottom right they will never notice the difference - several of us suggested that this would be the ideal compromise area for smoking, and I don't see it causing any problems for anyone - well, maybe the inevitable one or two who will deliberately walk into the smoking section and wave their hands around coughing a lot (but in there it will just look like they are dancing :D)

Quite right Pepper. As of my recent short jaunt on a Princess ship we could smoke in cabins, balconies, the wonderful smoking room right in the Casino ( easily double the size of Churchills), the Casino most nights ( but with the smoking room right there is was no inconvenience at all), along the port side of the promenade deck as there were built in ashtrays available all along the deck, in one side of the nightclub Skywalkers, on a couple of the terraced levels by the stern pool port side ( including a couple of tables for eating from the buffet), a designated area at the forward pool by the Terrace Bar and a couple of other places I remember sitting at near the middle pool.

I've a friend sailing Princess in a couple of weeks and will have them check as well. But this was my recent experience.

i must confess I don't know what Princess's policy has to do with a Cunard thread on the subject...I must have missed something since my priority now is packing to leave and test this new smoking business for myself, and not read more of the same old, same old rehash of what it is...what it will be. I'll find that out for myself next week from an onboard source I trust.

Cheers, Penny

A friend of mine just returned this past weekend from a Princess cruise and this information is still correct.

Not quite correct LibraLass41, as the UK Legislation regarding hotels only prohibits smoking in rooms 'to which the public have general access'. Bedrooms are therefore not included in the legislation, and whilst some hotels prohibit smoking in bedrooms, others still currently allow it.

David

Correct, David, and I'd already responded in similar vein. Unfortunately, the snipers appear to be out today, removing posts with which they disagree even if they're polite and factually correct.

your correct it is still on the webpage however I was informed only today that smoking is only on balconiys and some public rooms, Im happy to attach the letter for anyone to read, I assume this will take place shorty I also asked onboard re the cabins and it seems it thought to be correct and cabins will be non smoking and only allowed on balconys , P&O is now non smoking on any inside area and only on outside, re the casino, I asked several casino staff and they all said thet they had many people complain but they still came in and played, on my voyage the casino was very busy.

I have a lot of letters from many shipping lines and there is a lot of thought from almost all of them on this subject, its very interesting,

Port side of G32 is still a smoking area and yes its not noticed downstairs at all, although it is cold and dark up there

Ah well, as normal, it appears that certain folk close their ears to such information, as and when it suits.

Hilton and Holiday Inn still offer smoking rooms, as recently of this last week.

Crikey Rob 6582, you must be very well in with the powers that be to have such contacts.

If you wouldn't mind sharing here, l would be really interested to know the current thoughts on the smoking issue on various lines please.

Thanks in advance
