Upgrades, any rhyme or reason

I'm sailing with carnival and was contacted via email last week for an upgrade option for my cruise coming up on Sept 11th

They gave me an upgrade from a Guaranteed balcony to an aft balcony for 40 $

Regards,

Sharra

Did you have an assigned room at the time they called with the upgrade? Had you ever heard anything of the "unassigned" situation/game?

How many days before the sail date did they call?

Did you glean any clues what criteria they used to hand out the upgrades?

Thanks for responding!

Both times I had an assigned cabin at time of booking and did not get a phone call. I found out when I was in the VIP lounge checking in. As for criteria - maybe because I have cruised with Carnival 34 times.

Wondering if being contacted for an upsale (or free upgrade) is at all based on whether or not you booked originally with Carnival ORwith an outside TA.

Does Carnival want to reward those that booked direct with them?

I have received free upgrades both with booking through a travel agent and booking through Carnival's web site.
