Great Gift Ideas for the Crew

To all those asking why the steward was in her cabin while she was in the shower~ where does it say that in her post? It only says she was "in the bathroom" which could mean she was brushing her hair before she left the cabin and told him that he could come in and get started~

Just wondering where everyone got that she was in the shower~~??

I was wondering the same thing because I read her post a few times and never saw the mention of shower. Maybe it is an assumption because that is where most people sing.

Thank you! I had just run back as I'd forgotten something and was flittering about in the bathroom. My goodness where did they think I was showering?

It's my understanding that, if you fill out a comment card for them and are highly complimentary to them, it will go into their file and they will be eligible for extras from the company (extra day off, bonuses, etc.)

Not certain of this, but if someone can confirm?

I cannot confirm on the comment card but I will tell you that letter writing is a big plus for the employees. We are still in contact with one of our favorite bartenders from our Miracle 2008 sailing. Right after we returned I wrote a letter naming names, etc., and how they all made our vacation even more special than it already was. I did not tell this bartender I was writing a letter. She dropped me an email saying she had been brought into the boss' office. She thought she was in big trouble. They showed her a copy of my letter and said they were placing it in her employee folder to be used for promotion considerations.

I find the comment cards don't give me enough room to write everything I want to. I don't make a novel out of the letter I write but I make it a point to keep receipts with employee names so I can make sure I don't forget them and that I spell their names correctly. Employees have told us that any good comments work in their favor come promotion time.

So, we tip well and we comment well.

If you are so concerned about your staff, then why not pay them a decent salary? Why leave them at the mercy of guests tips?

If you would get off your high American horse of a moment, you would realize that union wage in Germany and the rest of the EU is a lot higher than in the US. In this country, workers do not need a second or third job to support their families, as a lot of people need to do in your wonderful country. People in this country do not rely on tips to get by, like waitresses in your country that have to drool over customers like a slave. Cleaning hotelrooms is not a high-income job in any country. Yes, it will pay the bills, but if you have 5 kids and a husband on welfare, you cannot afford to treat your kids to a night out.

You make it sound like I run a sweat shop here. We pay our staff above union wage, and give them holiday money, Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, etc. I do not ask my staff what they do with their money, but I still observe they really appreciate that little extra from a guest.

Leave a CD of your singing sounds pretty vain...

sure...if he or she commented on your singing...

but remember....they still prefer cash...

we always leave a tip in the hands of one of our

towell animals....a tip in each hand!!

Sorry, but I have been a server and have never drooled over a customer.

This reminds me of a post on a different thread about "how many does it take to change a light bulb"

1 to question if the light bulb was booked Early Saver

5 to lecture us all on the importance of light bulb burn out buying insurance

15 to complain about the light bulb smoking in the casino

2 to ask if the light bulb was smuggled on board

4 to lecture the light bulb smugglers

1 poll on what type of light bulb should be used

2 to ask why a regular light bulb is being used instead of those weak, spirally environmentally friendly light bulbs

1 who wants to give the light bulb a John Deere trinket

46 who respond that the light bulb just wants cash

:D

  • 2 weeks later...
I'm curious as to what do you give the room attendents when you stay at the Holiday Inn? What's the difference...I've stayed in hotels for over a week and I've never left anything other than a daily tip.

I think that there is a big difference is a hotel maid and a cruise ship cabin steward. A maid cleans your hotel room once a day. A cabin steward is in the cabin at least twice a day. I trust leaving some valuables out in my ship cabin but never in a hotel room. The hotel maids get paid a lot more than the base pay of a cabin steward. The cabin steward and the dining room wait staff are part of the cruise ship experience.

ROTFLMAO This is too funny.

OP unless your name is Susan...Susan Boyle or Rhianna I can personally guarantee that the room steward used that cd as a Frisbee or the like.

My boss once gave me a large porcelain duck made of carnival glass. I oohed and ahhed as if it were the crown jewels because I knew he brought it halfway across the world for me. I appreciated the gesture however I promptly donated it to the local salvation army.

You are confusing a person's graciousness with gratitude.

On my last cruise the room Stewart said how much he enjoyed my singing in the bathroom while he was busy cleaning. So on the last day I left him a cd I had made of me performing. OMG the look on his face was priceless! He even gave me a big hug lol! I'm planning on bringing half a dozen cd's on my next cruise to reward some of the crew for their hard work. They all seem to be such music lovers.

Does anyone else have any great gift ideas?

I sure hope you are joking about this.. If not, I am sure you are quite popular on the crew deck as this poor room steward tells this story over and over again to a laughing table of fellow crew members! Why on earth would a cabin steward from a 3rd world country, who is dirt poor want a cd of you singing "karoke". Most people can't stand Karoke live in person, much less on a homemade cd! Cash is king. try that next time to avoid being the butt of future jokes on the crew deck

I write letters and comment too. Even in stores when someone is really good I find out their feedback policy and submit a compliment. I often see people griping when things go wrong so I go out of my way to comment when someone is going out of the way to do their job with excellence. Never received an email back but that's so cool to hear it was made part of the bartender's permanent record.
