Smoking on Elation

Considering the 1/15/06 Elation sailing out of Galveston. My last cruise (5/03) was on the Paradise. I'm concerned with smokiness on board. Carnival tells me they don't designate any cabins as non-smoking (but that if someone has a medical condition such as allergies, they will make sure the cabin is "specially cleaned" whatever that means).

 

Anyone recently off the Elation ... how was the smoking situation? How was the ventilation in typically smoking areas like the piano bar, for instance? How about on deck? What about in closed spaces like corridors? The Promenade area?

 

Any and all information is greatly appreciated.

Hi! We just returned 2/06/05 from the Elation. I'm like you...concerned about it and very allergic to smoke.

 

The smoky areas are going to be smoky. I never entered the casino or the smoking lounges. That was hopeless for me. One bright spot: Carnival Elation now offers designated smoke-free gambling tables UPON REQUEST.

It didn't help me though, but it IS progress!

 

Both dining rooms and the Tiffany dining area are

SMOKE-FREE...YEA!!! So is the Mikado Lounge--where the shows and other entertainment is....

 

If I were you, I would ask for the special cleaning. I think someone had smoked or was smoking next door to our cabin because I had some minor allergy problems....just took Benadryl & I was OK.

 

Next time, I will ask for the special cleaning.

 

I wish they had NON-SMOKING rooms like all the best hotels have. And/or make the entire ship non-smoking

except for designated outdoor areas.

 

It wasn't unbearable. Just had to avoid the smoking areas.

 

It does state in the daily cruise newsletter where the

smoking/non-smoking areas are.

Sorry, but don't think that is going to happen. Carnival is in the business to make money & Paradise did not produce that profit from the non-smoking crowd. As stated above, all dining rooms & show lounges are non-smoking. Big ships have lots of room for smokers & non-smokers. :)

You took the statement out of context, "except for designated outdoor areas." The Paradise had NO designated areas.

Is it true that Carnival converted the Paradise to a smoking ship because of the lack of business they were getting from marketing it as a non-smoking only vessel? Couldn't remember if I heard that recently or not...

Part of the reason is that no tips based crew wanted to work on it because the tips were much lower at the bars, etc having it smoke free. Our waiter was telling us that last year. Said that they barely made any money at all!

It wasn't just the tip thing: the general buzz on the Paradise is that not just liquor but also gambling revenues on that ship were significantly below Carnival averages.

 

Moral: smokers drink and gamble more, so cruise lines prefer them as clientele (albeit Disney cruise line is doing quite well, thank you, with no casino and comparatively tough smoking rules.)

 

Whatever, I guess Carnival could take the "smokers spend more" logic even further and open up a "smokers only" ship....
