kceagle Posted February 11, 2005 #1 Share Posted February 11, 2005 Does anyone have any suggestions for fun things to do for shore excursions in Med. Everything is history, art, musuems everywhere. Of course we are interested in alot of that but we will be on a 12 day cruise and feel like we will be tired of these things after a few ports. I know this is not the same type of ports as in the Caribean but surely there must be some things to do other than tour in some of the ports. Thanks. Florida_cruisers Posted February 11, 2005 #2 Share Posted February 11, 2005 if you are going to Corfu, Greece you can also relax and hit the beach there.
Bruin Steve Posted February 11, 2005 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2005 Of course, some of us consider wandering around ancient cities, stopping for a Gelato, eating pizza in an outdoor cafe, drinking local beer or wine, etc. to be FUN!!! Before I can really answer this question, though, it would be helpful to know what your itinerary is...There are some nice beaches on Corfu...but, if your ship doesn't stop there, what's the point? There are beaches near many of the typical ports--Santorini, Villefranche, Mykonos, Corfu all give you the opportunity to hit a beach--or to split your day with some touring the town and some beach...but the beaches are simply just that--a beach...It's not one of those Caribbean beach stops with the jet skis, banana boats and parasailing... Of course, there are other ways to have "fun" as well...For example, you could go to Santorini and ride the burros up and down the cliff...and just sit in a cafe, drink a beer and enjot the view...Or you could set up a bicycle tour in one of the ports (there are some available)...Some folks think a "fun" day in Monte Carlo is just to go to the casino and gamble... Seriously, though, these ports are so intriguing, for me, I'd hate to waste the short windows available and NOT see as much of the great history. art and architecture as I could.... I do recommend taking part of your Rome stop and just hanging out at the Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain...
ldnrdh Posted February 12, 2005 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2005 I started a thread before we went to Australia asking for ACTIVE sightseeing options and got alot of options, maybe that is the word you were looking for. Will you be in Barcelona?if so I will pass on a website I got from the boards and we have arranged a canyoning trip with ( rapelling down waterfalls ) http://www.spanish-trails.com
usavvy2 Posted February 12, 2005 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2005 If you're going to London, Paris, Rome, Florence, etc. you can read one of Dan Brown's books about the DaVinci Code (London/Paris) or Angels & Demons (Rome, Florence, etc.) and then go to the places that his character - Robert Langdon went! kceagle Posted February 14, 2005 Author #6 Share Posted February 14, 2005 Thanks IDNRDH. The Spanish Trails website is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. I guess I should have used the word ACTIVE. Steve Bruin, The burro cliff ride would also be something my family would be interested in. Unfortunately, Santorni is not one of our ports. We will be in Rome for a couple of days before boarding and then our ports will be Dubrovnic, Naples, Sicily, Venice, Livorno, Nice, and Barcelona. Leejnd4 Posted February 14, 2005 #7 Share Posted February 14, 2005 kceagle, I've been thinking along the same lines as you for my cruise coming up in May, since I would like to get out and do some things that are physically active. Hoping to stave off too many excess pounds from all the incredible food, I suppose! Since you'll be in Livorno, here's an idea that I'm considering for my day there. There's a bicycle rental shop in Florence that does group tours, as well as individual bike rentals. I'm seriously thinking about hopping the train to Florence and renting a bike and touring the region that way. (I've been to Tuscany several times, so I've already seen all the major sights.) If you'd like the email address of the bike shop, let me know and I'll go look it up. Alternatively, you could take your day in Livorno and head down to the Cinque Terre, and spend the day hiking the breathtaking and magnificent goat paths between the villages. It'll take you a bit under two hours to get there, but it's SOOO worth it. We're stopping in Portofino as well, so I'll probably head there from that port, since it's closer. Of course, both of these options would depend on how much time you have in port. We're there from 8 am to 11 pm, so I would have plenty of time for either. Let me know if you'd like more details, I'm happy to oblige. :) LeeAnne

We will be there in early October and want to bike alittle in the tuscany region. Thank you for your help. Carol

Florida_cruisers Posted May 17, 2005 #10 Share Posted May 17, 2005 In Livorno, instead of Florence we are going to Tuscany to wonder around the town and drink some wine. In Corfu, we are going to the beach and do some shopping. I think that sounds like fun!
