Appropriate clothing...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Can you please settle something for me once and for all?

What is the usual dress code for the first-night's dinner? I know that we should bring a change of clothes in case we don't get our luggage in time, but what's considered appropriate - and inappropriate? Are shorts a no-no, even on the first night? Are khaki's ok, like on a casual night?

And during the day - by the pool, or doing things around the ship - what's appropriate then too? Shorts and tank tops, flip-flops? Can my hubby wear his omnipresent baseball cap? (I'm hoping you say No so I can get it off of his head!)

Thanks so much for clearing this up!

Here is a link to RCI's dress code:
[url="http://www.royalcaribbean.com/customersupport/faq/lifeOnboardFaq.do;jsessionid=0000v-vx0zFg6vsWkQWkBl8IB7F:v2mocajr#8"]Dress Code[/url]

Others have said that shorts are allowed in the dining room the first night since luggage may not have arrived.

I think during the day at the pool and such, just about anything is considered appropriate.

Maybe you can suggest the baseball cap might get blown off and lost at sea?

Thanks for the input Chicagomom. I had already check the RCCL website's dress code and couldn't really find this info. I keep wondering if I need to buy all new clothes for the daytimes instead of wearing my regular shorts & tops, and what to stow in my carry-on for the first night. I guess you can never really go wrong with khakis. And on any casual summer day, my DH is usually a walking advertisement for some local sports team.

It's funny, we're actually more confident about the dressy clothes that we're bringing than the casual stuff!

Don't worry about the dress code on the first night....it is casual. Pretty much anything goes. Jeans, shorts, ballcaps. We didn't get our luggage until after 8pm and we had early seating. My husband and many others were wearing their jeans. Don't worry about it.

As for your during the day clothes.... shorts, tanks, fip flops and ballcaps are prefectly acceptable.

Enjoy your cruise!

We never bring clothes in our carryon for the first night's dinner. If our luggage hasn't arrived in time, we just go in shorts and a t-shirt. We follow the guidelines the rest of the week.

There are 4 in our family and I need the room in the carryons for cameras, medicines, and other things that have to stay with us instead of a change of clothing and shoes for everyone.

on all of our cruises pretty much anything was appropriate on the first night. There were people in shorts and people who had obviously gotten their luggage and wanted to dress a little nicer.

Why is there ALWAYS questions about appropriate clothing.....eeekkk..they drive me crazy..use your head...who cares what you are wearing the first night..you have either just flown in or haven't received your luggage or don't give a darn....

In my opinion no one is going to point at you and say....gee she has shorts on and a wrinkled shirt...must be a slob.

I think it's a fair question. She's only trying to do the "right" thing.

Around the ship during the day, pretty much anything goes. I'd suggest getting a nice cover-up to travel from your cabin to the pool over your suit. Tank tops, shorts, flip-flops are the rule. If you have early seating for dinner, you may feel very over-dressed when walking around before dinner. On formal nights, some people change back into casual clothes after dinner, or maybe just go to the Windjammer. so you could be in a ballgown walking past someone on the promenade in a tee-shirt and shorts.

You're right about casual being harder to gauge than formal. I wore colorful pantsuit outfits with heels on the casual or smart casual nights in the dining room and I wouldn't say I was over-dressed but there were certainly a lot of women not as dressed up. You will see women wearing a polo shirt and docker style pants for example. I'm not being critical of that, I just expected dressier than that on the non-formal nights. Men have it easier, khakis and a polo shirt on casual nights, suit or tux on formal nights.

Don't stress about it because you will see all kinds of dress. Well, the packing part is stressful but I can't give you advice on that, I'm an overpacker.

Hi NJR-
I have my standard knit dress that works great for first nite, I just roll it up and put it in my carry on. I also roll up his no wrinkle dockers and a polo shirt. And we wear our sandals to dinner. Casual nites I wear capris with a sweater or nice tank top and sandels, he has his dockers and polo. Smart casual a sundress or dressy pants with a nice top, he likes his sport jacket with a polo or knit top with dockers. Formal nite we like to "dress to the nines". After all, how often do we get to wear gowns and tuxes?
The best is all day we hang around in our bathing suits with just a cover up or sarong or tees/tanks. This way we're already "dressed" in case we go inside for an activity or for meals. As for that baseball cap...it's hard to keep it on walking around the sun/pool deck (sorry, captain won't stop if it goes over board, lol).
Hope this helps...after all you are on VACATION AND WILL YOU EVER SEE THESE PEOPLE AGAIN, LOL???!!!

Thanks everyone, I knew you'd all help us out! OK then, I guess the first night is anything goes, and I guess I don't need an entirely new casual wardrobe for the daytimes. (*damn* [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img] ) And SNOOPY, good info about my hubby's baseball cap maybe flying off into the Caribbean somewhere. I'm banking that the Captain won't stop the ship to go and get it! [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]

Happy cruising everyone!!!

Hi hdawson -- Please don't get me wrong, my hubby definitely knows how to do the business casual thing and looks fantastic when dressed to the nines, but... any day after work or a lazy Saturday the baseball cap is there. He'd never wear it into a decent restaurant... He's the biggest sports fan I've ever met, and he just likes to advertise his Philly teams. njreindeer,

A Phillies baseball cap is appropriate anywhere on the ship, as is a Red Sox, Cubs or Braves cap. A Yankees cap, however, is NEVER appropriate for the ship or for anywhere decent people traverse.

Yellowjacket1, sscruising, megr1125 -- DH would agree 100% with you all about the Yankees - although I think he'd even agree MORE about the Mets! If I'm lucky, he might even sport his Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs or Boston Redsox caps too! But Phils are his hometown favorites - with a fantastic new ballpark. We've been there a few times already, it really is beautiful!

Folgy, after only three years of marriage I know which battles to fight and which ones are a completely lost cause, and believe me, the whole baseball cap thing cannot be won. [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

And Nancyquilts, I've got a brand-new credit card and I'm not afraid to use it! [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif[/img]
