altiva Posted October 5, 2011 Author #86 Share Posted October 5, 2011 Odessa is famous for its beaches. Altogether, they stretch along the city and the seashore, of course, and their length is 20 kilometres (about 12,4 miles). They all have their specific names and atmosphere. As now there is an Indian summer in Odessa, with high temperatures, I'd like to present to you Beach Otrada. The main distinction from the other beaches - a cableway, so you dont' have to walk down or up to reach the beach (there is a slope which you have to go down to, to reach a beach in Odessa, everywhere besides Arcadia beach). There is a yacht club nearby. Here are some photos: Ukrainian flag: Brook:

Jack-Daniels Posted November 8, 2011 #93 Share Posted November 8, 2011 Hello my dear friends. With collection of photos i want you to show how changed our city since his very beginning. The first photos is about our Pearl of Black Sea. The Odessa National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet is the oldest theater in Odessa. The first opera house was opened in 1810 and destroyed by fire in 1873. The modern building was constructed by Fellner and Helmer in neo-baroque style and opened in 1887. The luxorious hall follows rococo style. Its unique acoustics allows to deliver even a whisper from the stage to any part of the hall. The most recent renovation of the theater was completed in 2007. Jack-Daniels Posted November 8, 2011 #94 Share Posted November 8, 2011 The next point of our virtual tour will be the gate to our city. The Potemkin Stairs- is a giant stairway in Odessa, Ukraine. The stairs are considered a formal entrance into the city from the direction of the sea and are the best known symbol of Odessa. Officially known today as the Primorsky Stairs, they were originally known as the Boulevard steps, the Giant Staircase, or the Richelieu steps. The top step is 12.5 metres (41 ft) wide, and the lowest step is 21.7 metres (70.8 ft) wide. The staircase is 27 metres high, and extends for 142 metres, but it gives the illusion of greater length. The stairs were designed to create an optical illusion. A person looking down the stairs sees only the landings, and the steps are invisible, but a person looking up sees only steps, and the landings are invisible. A secondary illusion creates false perspective since the stairs are wider at the bottom than at the top. Looking up the stairs makes them seem longer than they are and looking down the stairs makes them seem not so long.
Jack-Daniels Posted November 8, 2011 #95 Share Posted November 8, 2011 Now we will move to the first predominantly grain-exchange.Subsequently Odessa City Hall.It occupies the Neoclassical building on Seaside Boulevard, built to a design by Francesco Boffo and Gregorio Toricelli in 1828-34. Every half-hour, the clock above the entrance chimes the melody "Odessa my town" (the same tune greeting incoming trains at the Odessa Train Station). This is from the operetta "White Acacia" by the Soviet composer Isaac Dunayevsky. In the building of modern Odessa City Hall was Stock exchnage in the past. Odessa City Hall is located on the cross of Primorskiy Boulevard, Chaikovskogo Lane and Pushkinskaya Street. In front of Odessa City Hall building is a small square, called “Dumaskaya” with a monument to Pushkin, canon extracted from French Fregate "Tiger" sank in battle with Russian troups during the Crimean War. altiva Posted November 22, 2011 Author #96 Share Posted November 22, 2011 November 26, 2011 Holodomor Remebrance Day. This day, all cities, town and villages in Ukraine and 32 capitals of countries- Ukrainian diasporas commemorate Holodomor Remembrance Day. It's dedicated to the victims of artificial famine in 1932-33. All the Ukrainian corn was forcibly taken from people and sold abroad for gold. Ukraine was cut off the whole world, with armed people guarding its borders and were left to die from hunger in their own country, which used to feed all the Europe with its corn. In Kiev, near National museum "Memorial to victims of Holodomor", mourning activities will take place. This year, the commemoration is specially dedicated to children, murdered then and not born, because of the Holodomor. Odessa authorities refused to announce the programme for this day, which lead to tension. The organisers say: "Then, bread could save us. Now, our memories can save us. Come. Remember. Light a candle!" 4 p.m. local time is a minute of Silence, during which, millions of Ukrainians all around the world, will light a candle and put it on their windows. If you want to join, light a candle and think about poor, starved to death victims. For your own safety, light one day votive candles.
