"Friendly" card games on HAL

Question for you HAL veterans:

I'm on the Zuiderdam on May 14, and there is a group of us (probably around six or so) who want to have a friendly, low-to-medium stakes poker game. We figure we'd rather give our hard-earned money to each other than to the casino, at least some of the time!

My question is this: Can we start up a poker game and bring our own chips, drinks, etc., in a card room? Or is this sort of thing frowned upon?

("...gambling? There is gambling going on here? I am shocked!")

Dave: Sorry, but the Zuiderdam does not have a card room as found on the non-vista class ships. Certainly couldn't take up card playing in the library. but have noticed card playing in other public areas. However, some of those areas have other activities going on at times & chip noise, chit-chat, etc., would be somewhat disturbing. Saw a few players around the Lido area, but here too, people gripe they can't get a table with card playing, etc. Guess you'll just have to play it by ear and find the best place you can....Cards were available in the library for $1.00....no more freebies....good luck.....

Happy cruising...

Although there isn't a designated card room, the Half Moon Room, the Hudson Room, and the Stuyvesant Room are all used to play cards. There are card tables in all 3 rooms. Sometimes the partions are used to section off the rooms - otherwise they are just one long room.

Be advised - we have been on cruises on both the Oosterdam and the Westerdam when there were bridge tournaments held in that area - therefore closed off to regular passengers.

If you do wish to play poker there you can take your own cards and chips there but it would be frowned upon if you took alcoholic drinks in there.

I would doubt that you could play for any sizable amount of money anywhere but in the casino. Poker would be considered connected to gambling more so than bridge or euchre and so would not be allowed. JOHO.

If you use chips, you can just say your playing for fun. No one needs to know that the chips have a pre-determined monetary value. When we were on Zuiderdam back in April, we got together a poker game on our second sea day. Since it was rainy, we started in the Crows nest. No one bothered us at all. Once the rain stopped, we decided the game would be better outside and moved it to our verandah. We did use chips and were playing $1 minimum. Like I said, no one in the Crows nest seemed to care.

We'd be interested in a Hold 'em game.

If you get a chance, you ought to check out our roll call. My party is arranged by my friend Bill, and of the nine of us, I think there are four, five or six poker players among us. Bill says he wants to play Hold 'Em and I am bringing the new Hold 'Em chips I got for Christmas. :)

  • 2 months later...

Did you all know that there is a poker tournament cruise on the Amsterdam 8/24/05 and one next year on the Oosterdam in July. You have to book it through the card player cruises agency though. I would like to know if you can join in the tournaments if you book through your own travel agent. They say no but I have read elsewhere that once you are on the ship they won't turn your money away.
