:pHi. Will be doing our first formal night soon it may sound silly to those of you who do them all the time but please can someone answer the following for me.

1) do you get a choice or is it just a set dinner menu, and what if you don't like anything on there.

2) what sort of meal do children get on formal night

3) We are select dining, will we be given a specific time to go on formal night

4) Do you get a complimentary drink or is it just the usual water and coffee that are free.

The answers to the above and anything else you think may be helpful would be much apreciated ( at least we have the clothes sorted out.)

1. You will have a set dinner menu just like the other nights. 2nd formal night will have lobster tail, order as many as you wish, usually has prime rib or filet mignon so order surf and turf.

2 Children can have anything off the menu but they will also have some things available for the kids...Burger, hot dogs, mac and cheese..

3. With Select dining you will dine just as you do the other nights.

4. No special drinks..

I just wanted to clarify what the menu is like just in case we have some confusion about what a "set" dinner menu is. I think of a "set menu" as possibly something like what is offered at a wedding banquet where you might have a choice of beef, chicken or fish, but every thing else is set, but others might have a different idea of what that means.

The menu on formal night will be full menue like what is offered on other nights. They will have the left side menu with the "Available Every Night" selection which include shrimp cocktail, escargot, steak, chicken and more. On the right side you will have a full menu with choice of several different appetizers, soups, salad, entrees, and dessert. So you can order your choice of appetizer, soup, salad ect. For your entree, you will probably have a choice of Beef, Sea Food, Chicken, Vegetarian and another protein like lamb or pork.

There is a thread on here with all the different menus including what night they were presented. I think it would be just a few pages back by now.

Select dining is the same as other nights, but you might want to review the process. I haven't done it but I believe that you will want to go into Celebrity's system ahead of time and make your reservations for all nights before you cruise.

You will have a choice of as on any other night. The choices will be a bit more "formal" in nature such as a dish made with lobster (not a lobster half, as was previously offered), some fancier beef dish, etc.

The other choices of soups or salads will be about the same as any night. The dessert choices may be a bit fancier too although they ALWAYS push Baked Alaska on all the passengers. I happen to dislke Baked Alaska and specifically request for the waiter NOT to bring it to me and instead I order some other delicious dessert from the list.

Children can choose from the same menu as adults but children's menu is the same every night (pretty junky food, IMO).

You do not get any complimentary drinks on Formal Night. Same as any other night.

1) The menu will be structured the same as every other night, but with some nicer specialty type items. Usually there is a steak option, lobster, a fish option, a chicken option etc. You will order your own appetizer, salad, main course and dessert with about 4 choices of each. There is also a menu of items available every night such as salmon, pasta, chicken... classic favorites. Here is a photo of the main dining room menu on our first night (not formal) but it shows the layout of the menu.

2) Children may order from the "adult" menu or the usual children's menu.

3) Haven't done Select Dining yet, but I believe you will still just arrive at whatever time you choose to eat dinner.

4)No complimentary drinks. The first formal night is usually the Captain's Gala and he will have a toast. The toast will include a complimentary glass of champagne. On our trip, the toast was held in the theater and we were given glasses of champagne as we entered.

What we did with Select Dining was, we booked a time online for the first night, allowing time to watch sailaway from the deck first. Then when we went to dine we also set up a standing reservation for 7.30 every night, but a couple of times when we changed our plans, we just told them in advance.

There was no prescribed time on the formal nights; it was still up to us to choose when we would like to eat.

Just a side note - According to the new menus that came out roughly a month ago, they are no longer offering lobster tails or filet mignon on formal nights. In fact, if you look at the new menus, it appears that formal nights are no longer going to be considered "special" in terms of the dining selections.

That's very interesting. I have viewed menus from two different posters within the past month, both of which indicate they have discontinued both filets and lobster tails. Are you saying that you were able to get both? if so, were they available on formal nights?

As far as pushing the Baked Alaska, I would say it goes beyond that. We were never asked which dessert we would like, but were instead brought the Baked Alaska. As the waiter walked away he mumbled something about also having Creme Brulee and Apple Pie available, but he didn't stick around and wait to find out our feelings about that.

Edited to add that this was on the Millennium just this past week, so our last formal night was Sept. 8th.

Just got off Solstice today and they had both filet and lobster tail. Filet on both nights, lobster on second night.

They actually always have a very nice dessert selection on formal nights so one would think that if it is printed on the menu that they actually may expect passengers to order some. Granted, almost all the waiters simply assume that everyone will want that Baked Alaska they so gingerly carried in the Baked Alaska parade (another pet peeve of mine) and are genuinely surprised and some get a bit agitated when I order something from the menu.

I didn't eat there, we were in Blu but I checked the menus on the last formal night of each of the restaurants to ensure they had lobster tails. All of them did except I believe Silk Harvest...
