CRUZCOOL Posted September 16, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2010 We are going on this cruise with the idea of not booking any excursions. We are headed to Bahamas, St. Maarten, and St Thomas. I would appreciate any tips or info on what to do in port without paying for excursions. I think we are going to hit up the Junkaroo beach, straw market, and Hard Rock in Nassau but not sure about the other two ports. Thanks
DonnaK Posted September 16, 2010 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2010 In St. Maarten, you can just walk down from the pier straight to a nice little beach, and to the main shopping area. It's probably 3/4 to 1 mile, and if that's too far, there is a water taxi. You can buy an inexpensive daily pass for unlimited trips between town, the beach and the pier. On the beach, you can get two beach chairs, an umbrella and a beverage for about $
nancronin Posted September 16, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2010 Last March at St. Thomas we took taxi to Sapphire Beach - liked it much better than Meaghan's Bay. Fewer people - clean rest rooms - place to eat or drink. We had taxi come back at a certain time for us. :)
cb at sea Posted September 16, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2010 We hardly ever take "excursions'....the beach is my destination! Cheap and easy!
wolfganghowell Posted September 16, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2010 We love taking the tram to Paradise Point in St Thomas and getting "bushwhacked." Great view, nice little bar to take a load off, cute bird show and an easy walk to and from. St Martin - love going to Orient Beach and just walking around and finding the right spot to hang. Mellow places and party places - beach is great. People watching is fun too. That is - if you walk to the adult beach. Or frightening. :D
suezyq50 Posted September 20, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 20, 2010 We went to Coki Beach at St. Thomas. Taxi was $9 per person, each way.
sandian Posted September 20, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 20, 2010 St Thomas we took taxi into town, then walked up to Blackbeards Castle, stunning views and there is a swimming pool you can use. Also an Amber Factory to look round. There is an admission charge for all of this but much cheaper than an excursion. You could easily spend the day here. After we walked down the ninety nine steps to town and back to the ship. Bear in mind the walk back to the ship is long but doable. St Maarten is also an easy day as stated previously take the Water Taxi over to the beach 6$ return use as many times as you want,at the beach walk along to the left until you are comfortable at what is getting offered to you. We had chairs, umbrellas and beers for three for 15$ for the day. When you are tired of the beach just take a few steps into town for plenty of shopping opportunities

bionicman97 Posted September 20, 2010 #9 Share Posted September 20, 2010 In St Thomas, when we got off the ship they had some open air (not sure how to describe it) taxis that would take you on an hour and a half tour of the island. We did one and enjoyed it. Cost was around $10 -15 per person.
Wilda Posted September 20, 2010 #10 Share Posted September 20, 2010 Rent a jeep in St Thomas and careen around the island til' you find your way to Megans Bay....or take the ferry from Red Hook to St. John and hang out at Mongoose Junction/do a little swimming at Trunk or Cinnamon Bay. In St. Maarten we take a cab to Orient Beach, always interesting people watching there;););)
dcward89 Posted September 20, 2010 #11 Share Posted September 20, 2010 wolfganghowell...getting "bushwacked" at the top of the tram in St. Thomas is one of my favorite memories from our first cruise. The term (bushwacked) has been a family joke ever since!!!
CRUZCOOL Posted September 20, 2010 Author #12 Share Posted September 20, 2010 What exactly is getting "bushwacked"?
The Flying Pirate Posted September 27, 2010 #13 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Bushwacked refers the the signature drink at Paradise Point. There is a tram and a road that will take you to the Bar at Paradise Point. There is also the Shipwreck Tavern at the base of the hill that has the best hamburgers in all the Caribbean. Be sure to try a Blackbeard Ale while you are in ST Thomas. It is a local brew only available in the USVI.
