Changing formal clothes after dinner?

Wow, I never expected such a response for my simple question.

 

You should have asked about smoking when wearing evening attire. That would really have set the cat amongst the pigeons! ;)

And many (including a lot of her captains) said that the QE2 was the last liner and that there would never be a replacement built. Will the QM2 hold that title now or will the design of her replacement be started soon?

Indeed! I have books from a few years back that say that the QE2 will be the last liner ever built (most of these were written after the United States and the France had retired). One or two say that there will never be a passenger ship built that will be larger than QE2 "as there is no need"...

QM2 has a design life of 40 years, so they shouldn't need to think about a replacement for a few years yet! And of course, she could well be the last liner!

I am not a smoker, however, I love the old movies where the women are wearing their ball gowns with the long black gloves and smoking a cigarette encased in a long holder. It seems so glamorous and classy!!

Hi Pepperrn, I think that there will always be a niche market for transatlantic ship travel and so I don't think QM2 will be the last Transatlantic Liner.There will always be myself included enough people to maintain a one ship Transatlantic Liner service despising airline travel being one of the reasons. And remember the majority of us here will be dead when QM2 goes out of service. I for one can't see myself being in a position to worry about whether to book or not for her final voyage.

Those are all reasons to dislike airline travel, and I agree with many of them.

 

But they aren't reason to despise it.

 

Let's face it - the airlines make modern life possible for many. If not most.

Stay formal or go to bed. That's what I did. Not that I'm too old to enjoy the excitement of the evenings, I just knew without asking - like Lynn's "personal code." Besides, climbing out of a tuxedo into something else is too much work. So I stayed formal or went to bed. And just loved it all.....

Hi All, Just got back from our med trip. Can tell you that some passengers do not follow the dress code in Kings Court on an evening.

 

We were walking through to go to dinner and noticed the dress was very casual, ie shorts and t shirts.

 

The other venues that change and have candle light were very popular and all the passengers did follow the dress code in these venues.

 

Can't say I noticed if they walked round the ship in their shorts and t shirts because we always went to the shows. Every body was always well dressed in there.

Hi Salacia, The alternative dining areas looked very nice, candle light and tablecloths. I would say most did follow the dress code in these venues. It made it look like a more enjoyable experience.

 

I will do a review of our trip later today. Did enquire about the QE for next year. We may skip next year because of our daughters wedding and may do a caribean trip in 2012. Unless we see a really good deal for next year.

On the two transatlantic crossings I have done on Cunard (QE2), I stayed in my formal wear throughout the evening, sometimes changing into more casual clothes well after midnight. However, as others have posted, the formal aspect of Cunard is what seperates them from many of the other cruise lines out there. Get dressed up and enjoy it!

We used to change back to csaual well after midnight. The smoke used to get pretty bad in the Casino,etc. They were starting to ban the smoking in most public rooms on our last trip. Nothing worse than having to dry clean your suites/tuxes a few time on a 10 day cruise.
