Southampton Hotel

Next year I will be taking on the Eclipse leaving from Southampton. Anyone know of a good hotel to stay at in Southampton the night prior?

If you ask on the British Ports of call boards you will get lots of answers and recommendations: the Holiday Inn Herbert Walker Ave is the closest - you can walk to the terminal; the DeVere Grand is probably the most expensive, and the Ibis and Etap are also very close and will be the cheapest.

The Mercure Dolphin is quite good, recently refurbished and just at the bottom of the high street for all those last minute shopping items. 10 mins to the port by taxi.

Wetherspoons pub a few doors away for not bad food and cheap drinks if thats your thing.

Avoid the Novotel at all cost! We stayed there in May for our Eclipse cruise. Never again. Lobby and staff are nice. Room was awful. No a/c, worn, dirty carpet, Cheese Doodles found under the bed and pull out sofa. Ick. You get the idea. This was supposed to have been one of their refurbished rooms, too. Only stayed there because it was prepaid and non-refundable after seeing the room.

Another vote for the Holiday Inn on Herbert Walker. Woke up early to the sounds of the ship docking! Looked out the huge picture window and saw the twinkling blue lights and knew our ship had come in!!!:)

There is a huge mall just a 5 minute walk away. The Titanic Museum is also a very short walking distance. 5 pound taxi ride from the train station. Best of all, wake up and walk 5 minutes with luggage over to the port entrance.

Keep in mind for the summer that the DeVere Hotel which is close by is modern looking but does NOT have air conditioning in the rooms!!!

Hope this helps.

To show you how close the HI is, look at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Herbert+Walker+Ave&daddr=Herbert+Walker+Ave&geocode=FfmoCAMdEHvq_w%3BFQSvCAMdwGnq_w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=17&dirflg=w&sll=50.899961,-1.412494&sspn=0.003918,0.009077&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17

The white building just to the right of 'A' is the HI, the long white building by 'B' is the cruise terminal, the entrance being in that curved grey bit just below the 'B'.

We also stayed at the Holiday Inn just 3 weeks ago and awoke to the beautuiful sight of the Celebrity Eclipse almost outside the window.

Room was adequate for just an overnight stay and breakfast ok the next morning,

The shopping centre is just a few minutes walk away and there are lots of places around to eat if you don't fancy eating in hotel.

Would stay here again no problem

To be honest as with all hotels/cruises it depends on your budget. The Grand Harbour hotel is very convenient to the ports so is Holiday Inn, Novotel and Ibis. If you are planning a few days holiday before your cruise then your best option would be Salisbury or Winchester.

With all these hotels you are only minutes away by taxi from the port.

we have stayed at the HI in and whilst very convenient and offering the lovely early morning view of our ship, wouldn't return there - not our cup of tea - the Grand Harbour had been our next choice but my parents found it very shabby and run down for the price - we found a lovely boutique hotel Ennios that is also in close proximity to the port. Depends if you prefer a large or small hotel really - try Tripadvisor where you will find many reviews on all the Southampton hotels.

I we stayed at the DeVere Hotel and if you are American, please go there at least for tea, it was fabulous! No a/c and was kind of shabby but it had that real English feel to it. Going again, I would stay at Holiday Inn for the view of the harbour and run across to DeVere for tea.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn last July for our Baltic cruise. We were there during very hot weather and we very glad of the air conditioning. It was fine, easy walk to the mall, restaurants etc. Beds were comfortable (we had arrived after a transatlantic flight and a train ride from Gatwick). I thought the breakfast was fine. The only downside and this was a big one was check out in the morning. It took forever and there was a big line up and as you got off the elevator you couldn't get through the line to get outside. In the morning we walked with our luggage to the Eclipse..it was easy.

Hi, For our last cruise in August we stayed at the Dolphin Hotel in the centre of Southampton on their cruise/park package. Fantastic!! Double room/evening meal/breakfast/2 weeks parking/taxi transfers to and from docks. £165 for us both!!:D. The hotel has just had a major refurbishment and it was excellent - couldn't beat the room comfort/food/staff friendliness and they were so helpful. Added bonus was that we were in the centre of town which meant that after dinner we were able to walk round a couple of bars and we had a great night. Also shopping centre is only a couple of minutes away if you have time - we did!!
