Israel was one of our stops last year I found that all the stops we were on excepted the Euro. Don't recall needing any Shekels for Israel since our tour there were no fees for anything, we were gone a full day in Israel and Bethlehem. Have fun!!:)

Anyone traveled to Israel who might be able to give a rough idea about cost(shekels) to enter various sites?

We paid 65 NIS pp for a combo ticket to the Tower of David Museum and night time Sound and Light Spectacular Show. The Palmach Museum cost 25 NIS, a private Kotel Tunnel Tour for 10 people cost 250 NIS, and a one hour camel ride (fabulous!) at the Negev Camel Ranch was 65 NIS.

In Haifa a few weeks ago, we went to several archaeological sites that are part of a network of National Parks and Nature Reserves. My guide was able to buy a combo ticket that saved some money. We were able to work out an exchange using US dollars, but they really preferred payment in shekels.

Entrance to the Israel Museum is 48 Shekels (NIS).

The combo ticket that Cynthia mentions is 130 NIS, and allows for admission to 65 sites; you can also buy a ticket for 90 NIS that allows admission to 6 sites of your choosing. Sites covered include Masada, the City of David, and Caesaria.

Here's the link for more info: THE GREEN CARD

BTW, most major sites will accept a credit card for payment. And, yes, ATMs are easily found, so you can withdraw shekels if you need them (and in major cities, esp near shopping areas popular with tourists, you'll find licensed money changers).

US dollars are accepted in many popular tourist spots; Euros or shekels are often preferred if the dollar is low, but you will likely still be able to pay in dollars, but be aware of the current exchange rate.

HTH!
