International air connections/customs

We leave Thurs morning, are routed from Tucson to Atlanta to Amsterdam to Budapest. We are on Delta. Does anyone know if we have to claim our luggage in Amsterdam and clear customs and check back in to go to Budapest? Or do we go through customs in Budapest? We only have an hour and 45 minutes in Amsterdam, but that was the connection Avalon and Delta gave us.

Thank you!!

I would think your bags are through checked to Budapest

Usually you just go through passport control in AMS then head to the connecting flight ...stay in the intransit area do not go to baggage area

Wow, you have quite a travel day!

We often have to make a double connection to our destination because of where we live. It is my experience that we do not see our bags until our final destination, as long as check them all the way through. We do have to clear immigration and in many cases, go through security at each airport, but we have not had to retrieve our bags and go through customs with them, as we do upon arrival into the first USA city when returning from Europe.

We recently flew from Toronto to Montreal to Frankfurt to Prague for our Danube river cruise on Avalon. We checked our bags in at Toronto airport and didn't see them again until Prague. We did have to go through security again in Frankfurt to transfer to our flight to Prague.Luckily it was in the same terminal.

You might have to on the return trip to the US. We had to fly through Newark Airport from Europe and had to claim bags, go through customs and PP check then recheck the bags. The airline was the same.

I am wondering if the folks with these multiple connections booked air through the cruise line?

Actually, we booked our own air. We were using points to get business class and this is what we could get. Our return, also using points, was much easier-Budapest to Munich to Toronto. There are no direct flights from Toronto to Prague or Budapest.

Upon arrival in the USA, US Citizens have to go through customs and immigration on the FIRST step you take back into this country with your luggage. If you are going on to another airport in the USA, you drop off your luggage at the designated drop off point. It is the law!!! Going to Europe, you just check your luggage on to the end. We had three airports to go through on our way to Basel, Switzerland in July. We didn't see our bags after we checked them through on AA at LAX and picked them up at the BA terminal in Basel.

Yes, that is what I typed: "as we do upon arrival into the first USA city when returning from Europe". It is required in the US to collect bags and go through customs at the first point of entry but we have never had to do that it in the states.

Yes, we have flown some creative routes as well when using points. The airlines make it harder and harder to do so.

Well, it depends on where you are flying FROM too. Sometimes we use points - sometimes we don't. BUT.......

we live in Corpus Christi TX and to get anywhere we must fly first to Houston or Dallas (or Atlanta on Delta - which we never use)....... so that is one stop right off the bat.

Our last trip we almost got lucky...... Corpus to Houston to Newark to Rome. THEN there were plane issues - Corpus to Houston to Newark to Paris to Rome  Seems there are "problems" every time we fly (which is often) which is why we always fly in 1-3 days before.

So if you live near a hub airport.....consider yourself lucky as you have it good ;)

Your luggage will be labeled through to your final destinations. (always check this to be sure.)

Since Hungary isnot a "schengen"country your transfer in Amsterdam will be from one gate to the other.

Pasportcontrol and customs will take place in Budapest.

1hr. 45 must be enough. Check maps etc. of Amsterdam airport on this link:

http://www.schiphol.nl/index_en.html

You will see plenty of taxfree shops, restaurants, even a small museum and a casino.
