We(3 of us) will be on the new Carnival Magic ship next September docking in Monaco. We want to shop and visit St. Paul de Vence and Eze only. We do not want a guide. We just want dropped off at each point and then returned to our cruise ship. Do you think we would be better off getting a cab to these points or should we hire a tour company. Thank you for your help.

These two places are a significant distance from each other and using a taxi would cost you hundreds of Euros. The most cost efficient way to see both of these places would be to simply rent a car in Monte Carlo and drive yourselves (total cost would be about $100 if you reserve in advance). It is also possible by public transit (we have discussed the details many times in previous posts).

From Monaco, Eze La Village is only a bus ride away. St Paul de Vence is much further away. We docked in Villefranche which is south of Monaco. From VF, our friends took a bus to Nice and then another bus to St Paul de Vence. So if you intend to see both towns, then start with St Paul de Vence.
