The World Cruise Ship

Have any of you heard of this ship? It docked here in Savannah Tuesday morning and I believe it is leaving today.

 

I wish I had the money to buy a Luxury apartment on a cruise ship and sail around the world!

It was docked in Baltimore on Friday. I couldn't imagine why. No offense to those who live in Baltimore (in fact, the reason that I was there was to shop for a new house on the water), but why, if you could go anywhere in the world....Baltimore? The residents of the ship vote on the prospective itinerary, so they must know something that I don't.

It was in Charleston 2 days ago. Amazing ship. I've seen a show on the Travel Channel on this ship. I'd LOVE to be a resident!

No offense to those who live in Baltimore (in fact, the reason that I was there was to shop for a new house on the water), but why, if you could go anywhere in the world....Baltimore? The residents of the ship vote on the prospective itinerary, so they must know something that I don't.

 

They might have stopped to pick up the best crab cakes in the world! ;)

i remember seeing a travel channel show about this ship some time ago. Nice idea, but crazy expensive!

I've seen "World" on the travel channel a couple of times and frankly, they all seem like a bunch of "snobs" to me. They don't offer much of what we, as regular cruisers, have grown to expect on cruises, and I think I'd get bored in VERY short order. If I had that kind of money, I'd probably just take my choice of regular cruises, any time I wanted to go. (Can you say, "back, to back, to back, to back?) :D

I agree. They don't have STUFF going on. you just kind of live on the ship and do as you please. I think it would get boring eventually.

I think it depends on who you are. There are plenty of people on CCL ships who aren't cruising for the schedule of activities. Not everyone wants a CD to lead them through their day. I can personally see the benefit of laying in the sun, being at sea, going to cool places, and having top of the line dining facilities at my disposal, even if it doesn't include Pool Games, Pictionary, Trivia, and all the other Catskills-esque activities.

Currently my planned retirement present to myself (and Mrs. TH) would be something I saw in the 2009 Carnival catalog. It had the Splendor repositioning from Caribbean to western Mexico, sailing around the Southern tip of South America. From beginning to end I think it was around 6-7 weeks and would cost around $40K for a couple to go in a Balcony (I think, kinda going from memory).

 

I realize ships/fares/itineraries will be different in 25+ years when I finally (hopefully) get to retire, but I'd love to do something like this, maybe an extended Mediterranean cruise also.

It's true. We haven't participated in an organized activity or attended a show in years. I would probably miss having a band occasionally, and I'd miss the casino, but for such an extended period having a casino at hand would be very, very bad anyway. I'd make do just fine.

I think I'd miss the casino, but so there are so many more places to gamble these days, surely you can hit up a casino in port if you feel the urge.

The World CruiseshipThe World is the name for a luxury cruise ship which slowly travels the world, spending 2-5 days at each port. It is a not a typical holiday cruise liner. On this cruise ship, it is owned by its residents. People buy their apartment, and can live on board, or call it their holiday home.

The World has a crew of 250 people, and 165 accommodation units - including, studio, 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments, and a 6 bedroom penthouse suite. It also has a grocery store, five restaurants, a movie theater, among many other amenities.

 

 

 

For those seeking a daily routine a bit more fulfilling than relaxing, being entertained, working on your fitness level and golf score, there are also many classes for which you can take part in. Need to learn a new language? Some new cooking skills? How about some dance lessons?

If you're looking to rent one of these rooms, one night in the studio apartment will cost you between $1300-$2300. Purchasing an apartment on board starts at $2 million, plus the annual maintenance fees which can range from $60 000 to $270 000. Likely if you have to ask 'how much?', it will cost too much.

Perhaps the dream wouldn't live up to the reality

 

It does sound great - a life of travel, while still returning home at night. However, having to dress in your best for every meal in order to 'keep up with the Jones' could be quite tiring.

I do enjoy my stays in humble hostels or bed and breakfasts, with guests eager to share their cost saving tips, and share taxi costs to the nearest train station. I would much prefer to schmooze over a home cooked meal than a fancy gastronomic meal each night, and not worry if my clothes are of the latest designer fashions.

I was thinking the same thing. Love seeing all the different cruise ships. That Princess ship was HUGE! (comparatively of course) I thought that the one that is in port today was a Norweigan ship because of the decorations on the hull until I looked at the port schedule. Had never heard of AIDA til today.

This is a very small and very boring little ship with wonderful accomodations but very little going on. I'd be bored to tears.
