Nebr.cruiser Posted November 5, 2010 #1 Share Posted November 5, 2010 We did an island tour two years ago when we were in Granada and on the way back to the ship we drove past the downtown area and got just a quick glimpse of the spectacular bay/harbor with the colorful buildings around it. This time, we'd like to find this area and spend some time, get some pictures as it was so lovely. We noticed that lots of people seemed to be walking back to the ship, through some kind of tunnel, etc. How far is it to this picturesque area? Walkable? Safe? Since we're not in port very long (7-2), we just want to spend some time wandering around seeing the sights.
Hunt1 Posted November 7, 2010 #2 Share Posted November 7, 2010 Downtown Grenada is very safe and clean. We will be there in January and are planing a walking tour. Start out by walking up to Fort George, just go to right after getting of the ship. From the top of the Fort you have a beautiful view of Carenage harbor. You can also tour the fort, that is where the movie Heartbrake Ridge was shot. From there walk down to the harbor, its about five blocks. Ther are some small shops and watering holes around the harbor. The fire station is a great picture. Walking back to the ship there is and outdoor market, about two blocks from the ship. A great place to pick up some local items and spices. Then there is the mall right before you get on the ship. Grenada is one of my favorite islands enjou the downtown. Also go to www.travelgrenada.com they a good city map of St. George
Nebr.cruiser Posted November 8, 2010 Author #3 Share Posted November 8, 2010 Thanks! I was beginning to think no one else had ever been there. This sounds very interesting and doable, especially if it's safe. We mostly just want to see the beautiful harbor with the colorful buildings, since we did an island tour before. snowcat Posted November 14, 2010 #4 Share Posted November 14, 2010 Just got back from a stop there...what a lovely island! The harbor (I think they called it the Carenage) was beautiful.
reesser Posted November 26, 2010 #5 Share Posted November 26, 2010 We were there about a year ago and will be there again in early December. I agree with an earlier comment about walking up the big hill right in front of the ship to the fort. I think it is a police or some military group with offices at the top. It has a great view of the port and downtown. To go directly downtown, walk through the tunnel that starts almost at the exit of the cruise terminal. There is a sidewalk on one side of the street in the tunnel. The one way car tunnel has a very small cross section. When you exit, you are at the beginning of the quaint downtown - there are a few stores for supplies, etc. Bob

Nebr.cruiser Posted December 24, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted December 24, 2010 We just got back from our cruise and took the advice about walking throught the tunnel to downtown. What a beautiful harbor! We enjoyed the walk very much (it was very hot, though) and went to the fort on the way back to the ship. Thanks for the great advice! It's not very far to the harbor area, but a beautiful walk.
jaybird from SC Posted February 12, 2011 #8 Share Posted February 12, 2011 If you're doing a walking tour on your own, it's quite an experience to walk through the tunnel which is shared by walkers and vehicles. Anyway there are a couple of nice restaurants over by the water and a neat little spice shop called "Dot's". She was very helpful with providing info about all the spices. Be careful going thru the tunnel on your walk back...you won't be facing the traffic.
