Are Cruise Ships Really This Delicate?

On many of the posts when someone "complains" about a physical aspect of a cruise someone will rationalize away the problem by blaming the passengers or some other phenomenon outside the ship's control.

If you're cabin is too hot or too cold it's because someone down the hall left their balcony door ajar to let in some refreshing, evening air. Another reason often suggested is that it's simply hot or cold outside and the ship's systems can only do so much.

If you're toilet is stopped up, overflowing, or generally not working it's because someone somewhere on the ship inappropriately used the facilities.

You smell tobacco smoke wherever you are because someone in the casino just lit that second cigarette.

Other odd, disconcerting smells are simple to explain. It appears that cruise ships just smell now and then.

Are these great liners really all that sensitive?

Yes ! If your air conditoner is on in your car and you leave the windows open, then your car will not run as effeciently either. Also if you plug your toilet on a ship ,as in hotels, the sewage systems are linked and others can go out of order as well. Smokeing, i won't get into as i am allergic and just stay away from those areas. I find perfume and after shave sometimes worse than some people smokeing.

If we all obey the rules then everything goes along fine and we all have a great cruise.

Yes. The things you site really are true. If people on the same air conditioning line as your cabin leave their veranda doors open, the a/c does not operate at its peak. Marine plumbing is not like land based. If people put non-marine toilet paper and tissues, flush cigarette butts, feminine products (any of those things they are known to flush at home), down a ship's toilet, it will clog the line. These are not 'wive's tales' so to speak.

Sometimes systems just break down, too.

everything on a ship is inteconnected, clods, jerks , fools and the odd idiot can reek havoc on the ship and fellow passengers.

Stupid actions at sea by the uncarring can cause problems. Now, in 30 years of cruising I have never had any such problem.

In the Navy we solved shop board problems with a " blanket Party"... this ususlay worked.... contact me if you need instructions as to hoe to host one.:D

Talk to any Boat Owner they will also tell you that the Plumbing in Marine Heads is very very delicate..Only Marine Grade toilet Paper, which by the way is quite expensive, can be flushed down those heads..

Every time we had guests aboard our boat, it was my job to explain to all the ladies, teens, & children, what could be put into the marine head & what must be wrapped & disposed of in the trash..If I failed to do this, we might be without a head until someone (my DH) took it completely apart & cleaned it out..And that's not a pretty picture! In addition we could only use certain biodegradable cleaners in the head, or the flexible pipes, which actually is marine tubing could be damaged...

On ships no matter how many times you tell people this, they will still flush tissues, diapers, etc down the toilets & stop them up..That's why there is a sign in your bathroom on HAL stating you will be charged if you flush something down the toilet & it causes a malfunction..

As someone else explained if you have your air on in your car & leave the windows open the Air does not work efficiently..Each cabin does not have it's own air handler.. Groups of cabins work off one handler..Leaving a door to a balcony open can cause the handler not to work at full efficiency, same as leaving a window open in your house or car..

You must remember salt water is very corrosive & so is the air which surrounds salt water..Things corrode faster in Ocean Air..Ships are in constant salt water/air & need to be repaired more often...For instance brass will pit & corrode much faster in a boat than it will on land far from the sea..

Re Smoking, well lets just leave that alone & say No Comment!;)

Cheers...:)Betty

A cruise ship reminds me a lot of an RV. Hubby and I have a really nice truck camper with full plumbing, shower, and potty. While our little rolling condo is nothing like a big cruise ship, I do have an appreciation for the need to treat everything with great care. All of our truck/camper trips have helped to remind me to do the right thing when we cruise and hopefully not "screw something up". I try to treat everything with a little TLC :D

Considering the number of folks aboard HAL who use Depends and try to flush them, it's a wonder the Dam toilets work at all...

I think a better word than delicate would be "complex" - the practical,

physical, and regulatory issues involved running the various systems of

a large passenger ship are very complicated, anything that complex

will naturally be prone to having issues.
