coscab Posted November 2, 2011 #53 Share Posted November 2, 2011 Or gratuities, or service charge, or whatever the terminology is with NCL. We are getting OBC from NCL (booked during a promo) and I am reading the boards and doing searches and from what I'm gathering, OBC cannot be used for this? So not only does NCL have the highest service charges in the industry (at the mass market level), even higher than Cunard, they then tell you OBC will not cover it. I've only cruised on NCL once before and didn't have OBC, so this is all new to me. Or maybe I'm interpreting this whole thing incorrectly and the OBC will be credited to my account regardless of where the charges are from? I see a lot of replies here but has anyone recently (like in the last month) sailed on NCL and actually can see that their OBC was used towards tips? I am sailing the Sun in Jan. and have 200. OBC , we were counting on it covering maybe half of the tips as well as some corkage charges, we book our excursions privately, and bring our own wine. Did you happen to notice that this thread has lain dormant for almost a year? There is another thread on the front page about what OBC can be used for. This policy changes all the time but I have never read where anyone came back and said they could not use if for the DSC. I got back last Saturday during the snow storm on Oct 29, 2011. My OBC was used for the DSC, drinks, an excursion, bottles of rum and tea shirts. They are even sending me a check for $94 for the reimbursable OBC I didn't spend. (Most OBC is non-reimbursable)

The better question is whether NCL has denied the use of OBC for the DSC for any passenger. In all my years of reading OBC threads here on CC, I have never seen one report of it happening. And the reason is simple: the accounting system that NCL uses on its fleet does not distinguish between different types of credits. OBC is seen as a credit by the computer and it is used to offset debits (onboard charges). That's all it does. I would be very surprised if your experience on the Sun differs. It would mean that they have changed their shipboard accounting system and, while that's possible, I don't see that happening.
RNPJN Posted November 2, 2011 #56 Share Posted November 2, 2011 Not correct. If all you have for on board charges is the DSC then OBC will not cover it. OBC will cover anything on your on board account except DSC. PE It covered ours in oct. 3 weeks ago:cool:
smeyer418 Posted November 2, 2011 #57 Share Posted November 2, 2011 There are two types of OBC. refundable and not refundable. Refundable can be used for anything. Non refundable can be used for anything except cash from the Casino and being paid back to you. I had a $175 of credit. It was used for the dsc until I bought cigs for my son....Oct 16-23, 2011 Believe me its easy on 7 days to spend a lot more...
