Anyone tried using voip to call home ?

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone tried using the internet service with a laptop or computer that is on board the cruise ship with a internet voip service such as Vonage or majic jack to call home to the united states. we are going on the Epic and wondering if it works.

You would not be able to use the NCL Internet Cafe computers for VOIP.

 

Technically, you could use VOIP on your own computer, but I am not sure that the bandwidth would always be available, since it is a shared satellite connection and slow to upload.

We did on the Pearl last month.

 

I was waiting for the results of a job interview and when I recieved an email asking me to contact them we used VOIP from our laptop in the cabin. (I got the job and started last week :D but I digress).

 

We then used it several times to call home to the UK. It was cheaper than using our mobile phones in port and the quality was suprisingly good. It was the first time we had tried it but we'll definitely use it in future.

We used Skype.

Using the ship's internet connection over wifi in the cabin. It wasn't perfect (there was a slight delay) but it was more than adequate and the actual line quality was excellent.

I'd like to point out that it really depends on the time of day when you use ship-board internet. I found on the Gem that 6:00 - 7:00 AM works pretty good.

 

(If you're waking up early due to jet-lag, make it work for you.) ;)

Skype worked good for us. Also when in port I could find an open network from my balcony.
