An option, if cost is the only issue, is a passport card. It's valid for the same length of time, but the cost is only $55 for a first time applicant. http://travel.state.gov/passport/ppt_card/ppt_card_3926.html The passport card is a nice cost-effective alternative, and there is rail service between BC and Seattle that you can take with the passport card in case of an emergency. I've also heard that you get processed faster coming back into the US because the card has a chip that brings your information up on the Customs computer automatically (have yet to find out first-hand).
