anyone ever do the canal solo?

17 days seems long for a solo cruise?

any thoughts/sugg. thank you :D

It does? I wish I could take 17 days off for a cruise. The longest

I have taken is 10 nights. Work and $ stop me from doing longer ones

right now but if I could go for a 17 nighter? I would jump on it in a

heartbeat. It is on my wishlist and one day I will do it:)

I have read alot of threads from solo cruisers who have taken long

ones....I read one by a gal named Karen and she went on a cruise for

over a month.....sounds like a piece of heaven to me!

Yep, been there, done that - and would love to do it again! :-)

As a solo cruiser, I don't see the length of the cruise as being an issue.

It would seem a lot longer with the wrong traveling companion!

Seriously, I did 69 days to Asia & Australia solo last year. Loved every minute. Was only alone when I wanted to be. The thing about traveling solo is that I can interact with strangers more naturally than I could if I appeared to be glued to a traveling companion.

I haven't done the Panama Canal as a single but have done it twice with my wife and loved it. If you haven't done the PC and love history then do it.

I lost my wife in Sept 2010 and will be going on my first solo cruise in March 2011, 14 day Southern Caribbean cruise but I considered doing another PC cruise instead. I really have enjoyed the 2 we did and would think about doing it again if the opportnity presented itself.

Have a great next cruise.

I think that doing a PC cruise one needs to enjoy sea days. For Christmas/New Years 2009/2010 I cruised on HAL's Amsterdam thru the PC for 16 nights. I picked an itinerary that was a good mix of port and sea days.

Now, whenever I look at a cruise itinerary, the first thing I look for is the mix of port and sea days. For me over 3 sea days in a row would make me a little nuts. Faith

I totally agree about the sea days! I have had a deposit down on a 28 day, but 18 of them are sea days. I wouldn't be just a little nuts...I'd probably be a "jumper"...lol...

Davechipp1974, I just did a 15 day solo trip through the canal in November and early December. The trip was broken up nice as far as the sea day, port day, goes, as they alternated most of the way through the trip. I enjoyed the trip, but I also like to read while on a sea day, so that keeps me out of the casinos a little more. I have also done the transatlantic trip with the six consecutive sea days, and that was a little too long between ports for me, but then everyone is different that way. Some people prefer the sea days to the port days. If you like the itinerary, I would go for it. Very relaxing on the longer cruises, as you get time to unwind. I would take more of the longer ones but my vacation time is limited, so I usually do a couple of 7 day trips a year. Last year I just did the one 15 day trip and it was great. Good luck on your trip.

Yes, I did it in 1990 on the original Royal Princess from Acapulco to San Juan. I was suppose to go with my parents, but my mother got ill and they both canceled. They insisted I go on my own so I flew to Acapulco to meet the ship. Now, I was 29 years old at the time and when I boarded no one looked under 65. I almost got off in Costa Rica and flew home as I felt way out of place; however, I had some very nice table mates and we all got so well. They sort of took me under their wing. There were two older sisters from Orlando who were just a hoot and we all never laughed so much at dinner. Actually into the cruise there were a few younger folks my age to hang with and I connected with one of the singers/entertainers onboard the ship. Going through the Canal was one of the highlights of my life. The Royal Princess was the flag ship of the Princess fleet and the food back then was gourmet and service simply flawless. I thought during the voyage how many 29 years old get to do something this incredible. Sometime you just have to make lemonade out of lemons and go with the flow. You really make the cruise what you want out of this. I'm so glad I didn't get off in Costa Rica as this was my most memorable cruise out of 20+ cruises I've done. This was a 10 day cruise which was just right for me personally. Is 17 days too long for a solo? Well, only you can make they determination. There are many solos who do those world voyages at 110 days. If its a cruise that sounds good to you....go for it. Do your homework and research things out and plan, plan, plan.

I believe my solo Panama Canal was 10 days ... on Coral Princess a few years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would do it again. Nice to have 17 days though, even more time to enjoy the peace!

As mentioned by others here, you're only solo when you want to be and the excursions are enjoyable too. Total freedom to have the experience you're looking for.

I did a nineteen day crossing from LA to Hong Kong, with only one port day in Hawaii, and I loved every single minute of it. There's so much to do, you never get bored.

I've also taken a 35 day cruise, and even that one wasn't too long. Although not as a solo, I've done 4 Panama Canal cruises and loved every single one of them. It's a fascinating cruise.
