Itinerary Change--Basque Country

We just found out that Oceania has changed our itinerary...

We were supposed to be in Bordeaux for two days...August 15 and 16...

Now we are only in Bordeaux on the 15th...

We now have:

16-Aug Biarritz (Saint-Jean-de-Luz), France 8:00am 6:00pm

Now, I know that Saint-Jean-de-Luz is on the French/Spanish border about halfway between Biarritz and San Sebastian...I was last in San Sebastian 35 years ago...

Question is...what to do with this day?

Originally, we were going to relax one day in Bordeaux and take a Wine tour the next...Now we have our tour guide scrambling to put together an alternative itinerary for the first day...

Now, when we dock in Saint-Jean-de-Luz the next day, what would be the best use of the day? Go to Biarritz? Visit San Sebastian? Maybe Hondarribia? Somewhere else? Some combination of the above?

Should we just wander on our own? Shore excursion? Or hire a tour guide? Any recommendations on a tour guide?

Thanks...

Ps. The stop after this one is Bilbao...

St Jean de Luz is a nice interesting place on its own. If you are going to hire a car, and the French Basque area is full of little picturesque villages, check that you would be allowed to take it over the border into Spain. Hondarrabia (Fuentarabia) is also a pretty town, literally just over the border. Personally, I would prefer to stay in St Jean de Luz rather than Biarritz

Hi Ainhoa,

We, also will be sailing to St Jean de Luz this summer and are curious why you prefer St Jean de Luz to Biarritz? If warm enough to swim, is there a beach in St Jean de Luz or is Biarritz a better place for swimming?

Thank you for your help.

Our cruise this summer will also stop for about 12 hrs at St Jean de Luz. We are planning to go to San Sebastián. Will try to stay as long as possible and return to ship via public transport , maybe a train to Hendaya and then a bus/taxi to St Jean, or a bus from San Sebastián to St Jean. The problem with the latter is that the afternoon bus leaves sort of early, 2:30 PM.
