Snorkeling at port in Cozumel?

We have cruised numerous times with small children (who are now teens), and if we are at a port that makes us a bit nervous, we always book ANY excursion with the cruise line. There are others with a different opionion, of course, but we just like the extra bit of comfort from an excursion that the cruise line has checked out. The cruise line provides safe transportation, there's safety in numbers and they take you to a place that is a little more safe than striking out on your own. We've taken a taxi and struck out on our own before, only to be taken by an "unscheduled" stop at a "friend" of the taxi drivers, where we've been pretty much stranded until we look at the merchandise or whatever. If the cruise line gets negative reports from passengers on an excursion, that vendor just doesn't get their business. They want their passengers to feel safe and well taken care of on the excursion. We have a couple of 17 year olds this time and they will either be with us or with an excursion booked through the cruise line...safety first and foremost. Just something to consider. I'm sure you'll get some good recommendations from others too.

Take a licensed cab to Paradise beach - the fares are posted on the board as you exit the port -- very popular and not off the beaten path. Good food, reasonable drink prices, new pool and updated changing facilities. You pay a $2 chair fee and are expected to order $10 of food/drinks. Water toys for your kids at an extra cost, okay snorkeling off the beach, and it will be filled with cruisers -- share a cab with some others in case you are nervous. Good luck! :)
