What to do in Anchorage

Sailing Millennium on northbound cruise in June. We disembark in Seward and will take the Celebrity train to Anchorage that same morning. Looking for something to do there as we will not be leaving until the following day. Any ideas? I hear it's beautiful and I'm glad we get to spend the day there but don't have a clue what to see or do.

I like the Alaska Native Heritage Center http://www.alaskanative.net/ (they run shuttles from various downtown areas) and the Anchorage Museum http://www.anchoragemuseum.org/

 

Rent a bike http://www.alaska-bike-rentals.com/default.aspx and head down the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail http://dnr.alaska.gov/parks/aktrails/ats/anc/knowlsct.htm

 

Hitting one of our local restaurants and having a nice meal and some god beverages!

Google 'Anchorage Visitor Information' or 'tourism' and you'll find plenty of information. Depends on what your interests are. I would recommend the Native Alaska Culture Center; it has great displays, exhibits and even performances. There's a free shuttle to the Culture Center from the sod-roofed Visitor Information Center downtown (an interesting sight in its own right). http://www.alaskanative.net/en/main_nav/plan_visit/

You can rent bikes and ride the Coastal Trail. There's a open air market on weekends. Earthquake Park. Museum. Watch hundreds of float planes take off from Lake Hood.

I like the idea of the open air market. I think we would also like to take in a museum. DH cannot ride bike (old injury) and the thought of eating at a place with really good food would be great. I guess I'm not looking for a nature deal since we will be doing a lot of that from the ship. I'll check out the sites you gave me. Thanks!

Here's the link to the Weekend Market http://www.anchoragemarkets.com/main.html So that's only available form 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (May 14th through September 11)! Got some good food vendors at it too!

 

We have lots of places with great food, all depends on what you like!

I'll chime in with another vote for the Native Alaska Heritage Centre. We also walked around the market but that did not take us much time. We went to the Ulu factory and watched people fishing on ship creek. we had a couple great meals at the Glacier Brewery. Be sure to try some reindeer sausage from one of the street vendors!

An alternative would be to enjoy your day in Seward. Excellent activities to consider with the varied wildlife jackpot of a Kenai Fjords boat tour. Then book yourself on the regular run of the Alaska RR, (the cruise contracted train you are taking can be 40% more).

 

Purchasing a coupon book can get you 2 for 1 on both the boat tour and train.

If it helps, there's a nice "Alaska App" for the iPhone that has lots of tourist information, contact numbers, pictures, and videos of stuff to do all around the state. Lots of info for Anchorage. Pretty sure it's free, too.

yes it's free. I downloaded it. Doesn't seem to useful to me right now as I'm in NJ and it actually locates you via GPS and recommends things nearby, but I'm sure it'll be a great thing to have once we get to Alaska!

Take the train from the ship to the Anchorage airport and pick up a car. Places are easy to find around Anchorage and you'll have some mobility. Take 5th Ave/Glenn Hwy to the Native Heritage Center; drive a few miles further and take the road up to Alpenglow Ski area near the military base for awesome views. Drive a bit further to community of Eagle River (about 20 miles from downtown Anchorage). Then you can return your car to the airport in the am when you fly out.
