There were TONS of fish in the water today which made swimming somewhat unenjoyable for me:

I am so with you on the fish thing. I HATE, HATE, HATE fish in the water with me. If I see them, I will leave. That would have made me unhappy as well. I saw some really big needle nose fish in the water in St. Johns years ago. I didn't go in the water for the rest of the day. :(

We live in Toronto!

 

It's too bad to hear that Mike is already gone - he was great! Apparently he started the Voyager off in Galveston so he wants to finish there as well! I don't know who his replacement is now, but hopefully someone just as good!

Day 5: St Maarten

I looked up the window when I woke up to see this and crossed my fingers that it would clear up quickly!

We ordered room service for breakfast today due to our early tour time of 8am with Bernard’s Tours. I ordered it for 7am, but they called at 6:10 to let us know they were on their way. Not knowing what time it was, I said okay, see you soon. Once I checked the clock and realized it was an hour early, I called room service and asked if they could hold off until closer to 7:00. The lady said she would try to find the man who called, however she thought he had already left. Our breakfast showed up around 6:50 in the end, so I’m not sure if she found him or if he would have come at that time anyway. After a late night though, the early wake-up call was not very much appreciated. The food was okay, however they forgot one or 2 things that we ordered. It didn’t ruin our meal though. As a side note, it's very difficult to eat without a proper table on the balcony. They put the tray on the table, but as you unload the plates, there's nowhere to put them except on the floor.

After breakfast outside on our balcony, we headed down to meet Bernard. There was a misprint in the cruise compass for today however, which said we’d be docking at 9:00am ship time, when we were actually to dock at 7:00. This, along with the fact that Bernard’s tour time is based on island time (1 hour ahead of ship time as they did NOT adjust the clocks forward for our cruise), created a lot of confusion and a lot of late passengers for the tour. Luckily Bernard put our group in another minibus with some others to ensure we wouldn’t have to wait around for the others. This was very much appreciated.

 

In the meantime, we checked out the ship's nice butt! ;)

Our tour was very different from the tour we did with Bernard a few years ago, but the different stops were very much appreciated. Our driver was the “Mail Man” as he calls himself and was great! We started out at a farm to feed the iguanas (did you know they eat bananas?), followed by a trip to a neat lookout point (and the “sea urchin man”), a 2 hour stop at Orient Beach for lunch and swimming, a 30 minute stop in Marigot for pastries, 30 minutes at Maho Beach to see the planes come in, and a little more touring. We had a wonderful day and for $35 per person plus tip, it was a great deal. He dropped us back at the ship at 3:15pm, with an option of dropping us off in downtown Phillipsburg for some shopping (although the stores were closing at 4:00), which we declined.

I know a lot of people were worried that their cruises would be more like those on Disney with the characters, however they were unobtrusive and you almost had to search for them and go to scheduled events to even see them. They were a great addition to the cruise though, and the adults enjoyed them just as much as the kids!

We ate dinner at the Windjammer today for a change of pace and hoping to have better food as the entrees in the main dining room have been lacking somewhat in quality. The food was okay. I had some sushi, and a pasta from the create-your-own pasta station. The selections change each night so some nights are better than others.

The show tonight was Music and Comedy with El Gaucho. Somehow it was boring and entertaining at the same time. I didn’t enjoy it as much as some of the other passengers did, but it was alright. After that there was an 80’s party in Studio B, but I decided to go to bed early as I was exhausted. Of course there was another towel animal waiting for me as well!

Do they let you take towels off the ship while you are at port?

I'm so glad you're enjoying it! :) They do let you take the towels off in port. You have to pick up the beach/pool towels at the poolside towel stand (you check them out with your seapass), so I'd recommend getting them the night before to avoid a trip up there on the mornings in port. Just make sure you bring them back before the end of your cruise to avoid a $25 per towel charge. You can check them in and out as often as you'd like, or just exchange them for fresh ones as needed.
