Restaurant recommendation in Anchorage

Looking to find a good place to eat in Anchorage near the Anchorage Hilton hotel. Will be staying there one night and I would like to try and find a place that does not specialize in fish. I will be eating a lot of that during the cruise, and DH does not eat any fish, so I'm thinking more along the steak or pasta line. Local ambience would be appreciated. Any Recommendations?

Actually, there are quite a few an easy walking distance from the Hilton. Downtown Anchorage isn't that big.

You have Rumrunners (up a block from the Hilton)http://www.rumrunnersak.com/index.php, or F Street right around the corner from there, but it's more of a bar atmosphere than restaurant

there's the Glacier Brewhouse http://www.glacierbrewhouse.com/,

Orso's http://www.orsoalaska.com/,

Humpy's http://www.humpys.com/anc/,

Snowgoose http://www.alaskabeers.com/,

Simon & Seafort's. http://www.simonandseaforts.com/page/menu

Sacks http://www.sackscafe.com/sacks/

That being said alot of the places such as Brewhouse, Orso's and Simon's get very busy and reservations are recommended otherwise you could be looking at a 45 minute to an hour and a half. Even sometimes with a reservation you have to wait 15 to 20 minutes for the tables to turnover.

my mouth is drooling already. this gives me a great variety. Thanks so much. I'll be sure to make reservations. That day is my b-day so I want to make sure we get a chance to experience the local establishments and enjoy the end of a perfect cruise.

I came across these useful threads on another forum, one frequented by Anchorage locals:

Best, not fancy, places to eat in Anchorage

Looking for a good place Downtown to have drinks

And, as a corollary: Worst places to eat in Anchorage

There's a lot of really good information in those discussions!

The first one has some good places on it but a lot of them aren't downtown.

If you have a car Bear's Tooth, Moose's Tooth, Gwennies, Arctic Roadrunner, Guidos. I could go on all day probably :D

Hi Susan,

We lucked out the last time we went to Brewhouse. No wait-had reservations and the place seemed packed. Going to try Humpy's this summer. Do you think we'd need reservations for dinner mid-week?

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,

Humpy's is one that doesn't take reservations. Also, once tourist season hits, it seems that our restaurants can be full no matter what day of the week it is.

Thanks, Susan, for such a quick reply. Hopefully, the wait won't be too long. Have seen on CC that the halibut and chips are very good.

Bruce,

If you want to eat an early dinner, say before 6, you'd probably have no problems getting right in.

In fact, some restaurants offer special dining deals for the early hours. I know Simon and Seaforts does a $25.00 per person meal with soup/salad, entree (limited selection), and desert from 4-6pm. I'm sure other places offer something similar as well.

Simon has changed their hours slightly (took a half hour off of the early Happy Hour too :(:D), so the hours now are -

First Seating: Mon-Fri 5pm-6pm; Sat & Sun 4:30pm-5:30pm

Ah, haven't been there since Christmas. Always like their food and wonderful view of the inlet.
