Smoking.

Well, tobacco isn't an allergen. It doesn't accomplish anything to point this out, however.

Correction. It is an allergen. A severe one.

I am allergic to tobacco. I can't touch it in plant form (I break out in a severe rash and hives), and my throat feels like its going to close up. I can't smell it (I get hives, my throat closes up, itchy watery eyes, and a severe headache). I can't walk into a smoke filled room same reason. I get the same reaction if I smell someone who has smoke on their clothes, or has touched tobacco.

I've been diagnosed by an Allergist that yes this is what I'm allergic to. So, tobacco is an allergen.

Have you been tested for tobacco smoke also? The smoke is altered from the tobacco raw state from the heat and loses its allergen properties. If you walk into a room filled with smoke from oak or poplar do you have the same reactions as to tobacco smoke?

I have been in training rooms filled with smoke and I can tell you that I hate it. Smoke makes my eyes hurt and my nose run, I much prefer smoke free air.

I've actually never been put into those situations. Nor did the allergist test for that. Its weird, I'm not allergic to peppers and eggplant, yet I'm highly allergic to tobacco. Eggplant, peppers, and tobacco are all nightshades.

What she said happens is that even though tobacco gets altered, it still leaves behind particles. Particles is still tobacco. I have to be very careful while walking along the beach for cigarette butts, or even walking down the street. It isnt fun. I'm actually allergic to certain people if they've been smoking for a long time.

And to make it a double whammy for me, I have asthma as well.

Your asthma could be a result from long term exposure to allergens, what else are you allergic to?

I was actually diagnosed with asthma as a young child, so I've had it for a while. Its hereditary, my mother and great grandmother both have (or had it in the case of my great grandmother).

But I'm allergic to ragweed, mold, certain cleaning supplies (Lysol, Raid), dust and I also suspect I've developed an allergy to fish (I don't like fish at all, but whenever I smell it or touch it I get hives).

You might want to carry an EpiPen and let your spouse now how and when to use it.

A diner at a restaurant ordered a dish and did not know it had crab meat in it, he died pretty quick. Had he carried an EpiPen he may still be alive today.

Family Wins $750,000 After Ruby Tuesday 'Crab Meat' Death

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A court has ordered Ruby Tuesday to pay $750,000 to the family of a man who died after eating at a restaurant in Clayton county. The family of Rodney Hawkins sued after they said the Ruby Tuesday on Tara Boulevard got his order wrong and served him a dish with crab meat last year.Hawkins was allergic to shellfish. An autopsy Monday confirmed that 35-year-old Rodney Hawkins went into anaphylactic shock and died after eating the dish at the Ruby Tuesday restaurant.Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Hawkins had ordered a chicken dish that contained no shellfish but was served another chicken dish that contained crab.Hawkins immediately began showing symptoms and collapsed at the restaurant, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.But Rick Johnson, spokesman for the Marvyille, Tenn.-based Ruby Tuesday company, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the server's order pad and the kitchen ticket indicate that Hawkins ordered the Chicken Oscar, a dish with crab meat. Johnson called the situation "tragic" and expressed condolences for Hawkins' family.

Great information by the squid. I found it very interesting reading.

I have allergies but I carry epipens for mine...If a wasp stings me please dial an ambulance...I may die...

Smoke, pollen etc do not affect me but perfume causes me breathing problems and severe headache.

That was a great post by Squid - Thanks!

One thing we may all find is that for many of us, our "Tobacco allergy" could actually be to the perfumes and other additives that are added to the tobacco as well as the burning pesticide residues. If there is one thing that can stop my breath faster than perfume, it is burning perfume.

To those who ask what we do in our normal life, I realized today I have only encountered smoke one day ( I went into downtown Seattle & there were some smoking panhandlers piled up on one corner ) in the last three months since I have been home.

Even though it is a rare thing to be hit by smoke or perfume, I never leave home without a R95 mask (3M 8247) and an emergency inhaler.

Years ago when I was not behind a desk I had a "guest" in the back seat I was taking to the mental health hospital that smelled so bad that when he asked if he could smoke and I said yes. I really can't stand people that smell foul or have too much perfume on. Smoking is just one of the odors I really don't like to smell.

I wonder what would happen if all these anti-smoking people started suing the cruise lines? I'll bet a judge would throw them and their suits out of court. Nothing worse than a reformed smoker. They are the worst.

Um, years ago people said the same thing about the tobacco companies being sued for the deaths and illnesses of people, the judge will laugh them out of court;).

It is a funny thing how our bodies react to antigens, in your case I would assume that you were stung by a wasp and nothing happened, so you thought. You body reacted to the antigen and now if you get stung again your body may react violently risking you with anaphylactic shock. Have you had a bad reaction to a wasp sting yet? I hope you never have to use your EpiPen, but if you do I wish you the best.

Many people claim to have allergies but have never been tested. If you think you may be allergic to something, go to a doctor and find out for sure. Your life could depend on it.

I live in the UK. Over here you cannot just buy an epipen, it has to be prescribed by a doctor and dispensed by a pharmacy. To get the precription in the first instance you need to go through rigorous testing with a specialist doctor at the hospital. This is as a result of being stung and admitted near death as I was unable to breath because my throat swelled blocking air entry and starving vital organs of oxygenated blood. That doctor then informs you and your general practioner of the outcome and only then are epipens made available by requesting a prescription. The advice is to administer one dose, dial an ambulance, then administer further doses if needed until the ambulance arrives and whisks you to hospital. Anaphalactic shock is serious.

OP.. We are smokers and so some may say our opinion does not matter. I can tell you even though we are smokers we HATE the smell of smoke in a hotel room, stateroom, etc. We can honestly barely take it some times in the casino. I know. .sounds weird.. but I never said we were normal.. LOL. Anyway, I did want to say that we have never smelled smoke in a cabin we have had on NCL or really any other cruise line. Sometimes you can smell it in the hallways when you pass a stateroom where someone is smoking in the stateroom. I wish there was a way that when we smoke on our balcony that we could ensure that the smoke goes straight out to sea, but we can't. We always try to book a suite on the Aft to try to help that issue and we always try to be aware of if our neighbors are out on their balcony. I do hope you have a great cruise.

  • 2 weeks later...

If you had of asked me about the smoking policy on NCL, I would have told you there is no way you can smoke in the cabins. I was shocked to read this thread and find out you could. The reason is because we have sailed NCL 3 times, and have never even smelled a trace of smoke in the cabins. You should not worry at all imo.

One cruise we have been on, our balcony neighbor had their balconies open to the neighbors down from them, and all of them were smokers. We were downwind, so any time they were out there, we could not be. That happened once, but we still had a fabulous cruise.

Besides the casino and one other bar/lounge, we have never smelled a hint of smoke.

Until otherwise, I accept NCL with its smoking policy because I love the suite perks and freestyle. I do not smoke.

Just wish they would have one or two non-smoking nights in the casino like my friend told me RCI did on her last cruise. That way both camps at least can gamble in the casino sometime, on their own terms.

Sure as a smoker and a gamer I think that sounds very fair. And the nights they make the casino non-smoking they can make a bar/lounge or 2 smoking allowed.

I think it would be very nice to see the two camps come closer as well to living on the same planet and finding compromising solutions.

Wow what did all you non smoker folks do in the days when smoking was allowed everywhere.

It's amazing how many people have or are getting the smoking allergy these days, but the crap everyone puts in their mouths day after day from fast food and buffets including ships is just all ok. Oh and lets not forget booze too!

There is some merit to what you say, but keep in mind that what I eat ends up in my body and what I drink ends up in my body. When a person smokes, the smoke from the cigarette (spelling?) lingers and/or travels, which affects others.

There is a difference.

You have a point but I guess what I'm getting at is the whining from non smokers are the same ones that go to the casino and bitch when someone sits beside them and smokes.

If you don't like it get up and move.

We are non smokers we chose to cruise, smokers have their rights too so rather than waste our energy we just move.

Frankly I get tired of peoples ranting over stupid things, if it's that bad then stay home.

We forget that we could be sitting in the middle of Japans earthquake area, how soon we forget how good most of us have it.

i am a smoker. i dont smoke in my house. i can promise you, our room anyway, did not smell like smoke. i get stuffy when in a smoke filled room and im a smoker. i have to say, i do have respect for those who do not smoke. i dont like the smell myself. (go figure)

im sure, if the smoker next to you is anything like me....if you ask them nicely to not let their smoke blow your way, im sure they'll move. im just saying, i know i would.

I feel exactly the same way. If I sit in the casino, I am very conscious of whether the person next to me is a smoker or not, and I don't light up until I know for sure it's okay. But what REALLY irritates me is when I am sitting by myself, smoking and playing at a slot machine, and someone sits down next to me and starts waving and coughing. The way I see it, I was there first, and if my smoke bothers you, you should go sit somewhere else. FWIW, I usually sit at the same machine for hours at a time, and if someone sits next to me, I hold off smoking for a good while, but eventually I am going to have a cigarette... I have been known to step away my (reserved) machine to smoke when someone polite sits down...
