Using a cell phone from Alaska

in the major cities and with normal carriers the cell phone systems are pretty much like in the lower 48. However, there are little roaming carriers in the small cities so beware.

I am speaking from the perspective of a verizon user.

Several of my friends couldn't believe that I was returning calls from Skagway. My Verizon calls from all of my ports were clear as a bell.

Do watch it if you cross the Canadian border (from Skagway.) You'll get hit there.

Be careful using your phone while on the ship while docked at some of the smaller cities in Alaska:cool:. I had over $150.00 in roaming charges because I was using the ships cell service. My carrier (t-mobile) issued a credit because I was a longtime customer.

I have Sprint and had no difficulty at all in Alaska without roaming charges. I had my phone set not to work if it was roaming. The only place I had no service was outside of Skagway at the Goldrush cemetary.
