Do you carry your passport in port?

Wow, I guess some of you would freak out if you had your passport collected at embarkation. That has happened to us on a Caribbean cruise on a Greek line. Passports were collected at the pier by the purser. They were returned to us at US immigration. We have been on several European cruises where the passports were also collected at embarkation and we picked them up at the purser's office (had to show photo ID and room key) before heading to immigration. Also, in Europe (especially France) we've had hotels collect passports and return them when we checked out. Some places notify the local police of all foreign visitors. It also makes sure the bill is paid and the key returned.

Wouldn't freak us out. When in Rome...etc. We've never been asked to surrender our passports when travelling in Europe.

I know that some areas it is required, just not been our experience.
