When I went on a cruise with my brother in law out of Tampa, He had an abcess develop and was in pain. The ship set him up with a doctor for (dentist) for when we arrived in New orleans in 2 days. He self medicated until then with advil and beer.

I was just curious what would happen if you had any dental needs while onboard..... I'm not a worrywart....but was just wondering as my husband and I both just had some major dental work done

I personally would speak to my Dentist and let him know you are going away.. and if something happens is there some precautions you can take.. like maybe have extra meds on hand to hold you over until you return ....

Ship Doc will help you for pain, they had some kind of kit they use. I didn't have pain I broke a tooth in Jan. Next day we were in Cozumel and the Doc helped me find a dentest. No problem there was one right at the port area. Went right in and cost me $40 to fix it. The crew does know where all the the dentests are at the ports, they will help. Very happy how they helped me.

Ok, here's my deal. I'm to have a root canal done tomorrow with a specialist (3/15) and we leave on 3/20! I also have a cold from hell! Someone told me with my cold, they wont' do it. Right now, cross my fingers, I'm not having any trouble with the tooth My thoughts are what they don't do it? I have pain meds that my daughter didn't take after surgery that I'm taking with us. My dentist is giving me antiobotics, just in case. I'm SO glad you posted that the crew can/will help direct me in ports to a dentist if I need one. THANKS.

Taking pain medications that are prescribed for someone else is both illegal and dangerous. Ask your dentist to prescribe something that is appropriate to your condition.

The pain meds from your daughter have to be in the original container with the name of a person who is sailing. (it is a narcotic) Going through customs could be a problem. just sayin

Have you seen medication checked while going through customs?

Hopefully you can get your root canal done tomorrow and all will be ok. If not take whatever pain meds you have and good luck. I have not found a pain med that stops nerve pain yet.....

I just had a root canal done and you really do need to be able to breath through your nose so I can see postponing it. Ask your dentist for antibiotics and a prescription for ibuprofin for the meantime. That's what they gave me. You should be ok for the cruise.

Have a gret cruise and I hope your cold goes away soon.

Experience from my 17 yo having a root canal.....depending on where you're at in the process the two things to worry about is....

*** infection hence pain so make sure you're on an antibiotic and get pain meds prescribed for you by dentist or doctor

*** breaking hollow tooth while waiting for cap or crown. Be careful while eating.

Good luck and happy sailing!

Good luck with your procedure, and I really hope you bought traveller's insurance!

My friend left Jax on the Fascination some years ago, and developed a painful absess on day 2 (sea day). He saw the ship's doc (cha-ching), who gave him meds for the pain (cha-ching) and I think an antibiotic (cha-ching cha-ching), then told my friend he had 2 choices:

1) Try to find a reliable dentist in Nassau to take care of the problem, or

2) Stick it out on the meds for the rest of the cruise and see a dentist the minute he returned to Jax.

Not liking option 1, my friend chose to suffer through and try to enjoy what he could of his remaining cruise days. Back in Jax, he went to a dentist he heard was reputable and who took care of the problem right then and there (cha-CHING!)

Fortunately, he bought insurance before his trip, which covered every last penny of his onboard medical expenses AND his entire dental bill from his visit/emergency dental surgery the day of debarkation.

Given the tooth isn't bothering you, postpone the extraction until after you return. Concentrate on getting rid of the cold...nothing worse than feeling poorly when you're suppose to be enjoying your vacation ! Have a great cruise. :D

First of all if you are sick they wont let you board the ship.

Second you didnt say why you need the root canal if it is due to abcess or pain then you have no choice.

If your dentists advice is to do a root canal you should get it done before you fly or you may have the worst tooth ache from the pressure if the tooth decides to become a problem.

I would still get the antibotics and pain meds sometimes after a root canal they want you on antibotics especially if you have an abcess .

PS. I am a Registered Dental Assistant for over 30 years

When I was on a cruise.... a molar crown came off. I carry denture adhesive in case a crown comes off. I was able to put the crown back on my molar. I saw my dentist when I got home. The crown was old so I had to get a new crown.

good luck to the OP. fyi, last year on the Miracle there was an announcement one night over the loudspeaker "if there is an orthodontist on board please call......"

... or even better: an orthodontic assistant! ;)

After an incident with a crown falling off a front tooth and no dental glue at the infirmary, I now have dental glue packed in my first aid kit.

Temp-Bond is one of the items on my pre-cruise packing list! Of course, I will never need it because I have it... and that's half the point! :)

Having lost a crown over a weekend, I now carry Fix-O-Dent with me when I cruise. My dentist told me if possible to put the crown back on until she could see me Monday....worked great. Hope your procedure goes well!

I totally agree with KruznKel (and gemcruiser, too!).

This is such an ironic topic as I am a Dental Hygienist and my boss and I always say that we should look into setting up a practice onboard a cruise ship. I mean they already do whitening; it would be nice to have a dental professional onboard ICE.:D

I briefly looked at the "Sea Dentist" deal a few years ago (I think it was with Holland America). They would pay for you to be in an inside cabin as I recall, but YOU had to pay for some type of basic supplies fee. Additionally, you had to be in the operatory for a fair period of time. I suppose there is also a chance that if you were "off" in the evening and had an emergency, that could impact your ability to drink as well! In the end, it did not sound like much of a vacation to me!
