We stayed at the Ritz before our Insignia Cruise, and we loved it. The rate was very low when compared to their hotels around the world. We booked it ourself, not through Oceania which was using the hotel at that time. It is in a very good flat neighborhood with lots of good restaurants.

Another vote for the Ritz and make you snag a package with their wonderful breakfast.:)

Amex is constantly running promotions for the Santiago Ritz, although nothing as far out as 2012 yet.

Before I booked anything else for this hotel, I'd contact American Express.com (1-800-297-2977) to see what they can offer.

CC members used the Hotel Orly this past January...lovely boutique hotel in a great walking area...lots of restaurants and close to a HOHO stop/shopping as well. Not a big corporate hotel but small and intimate, and very well rated on Trip Advisor...we all enjoyed it! LuAnn

We stayed at the Hotel Orly for nearly a week post cruise in 2007 and also highly recommend. Very friendly service and wonderful location with LOTS of nearby local restaurants to choose from. Near a subway station as well, although the subway is not particularly useful in Santiago.

I'm with Joe and LuAnn, we're just back from Insignia's Secrets of South America (Feb 5th from Valparaiso). We stayed 2 nights in Santiago and 2 nights in Valpo before the cruise. In Santiago we chose the Aubrey hotel, highly rated on tripadvisor, in the Bella Vista (Providencia) area of Santiago. It was in a delightful neighborhood of Santiago, beautiful tree-lined streets, much like Greenwich Village in NYC, wonderful for exploring on foot, for restaurants and boutiques. Rooms were a bit small, but very comfortable, the service outstanding, and the included breakfast was delicious. We preferred the unique charms of a boutique hotel to the big box uniformity of a large chain. To each his own, that's what makes this an interesting world. :-)

In 2008 on a six week trip to Chile & Argentina, we stayed at a B&B in Santiago called Casa Newen, and had a very good experience. Adda and Luis were exceptionally hospitable and both speak very good English. Luis picked us up at the airport for a small fee. The accommodations are separate from the main house and are clustered around a small courtyard. It's spare, not as fancy as some of the other places mentioned but is in a good central area and will offer something different, safe and authentic in the way of atmosphere. The B&B is explained with pics and reviews at TripAdvisor. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g294305-d611295-Reviews-Casa_Newen_Bed_and_Breakfast-Santiago.html

We stayed at a hotel called "Petit Hotel LAmbassade". You can look at their web page. This is in the area of Providencia. Their prices were reasonable in comparisson with other hotels. They can organize a transfer from Airport. Very friendly people and nice breakfast. It is just a small hotel, like a villa that used to be an embassy. Who knows, you might have the whole house for yourself....:)
