chef_christoph Posted March 22, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 22, 2011 I was looking at some pictures of my first cruise tonight and I came across two photos that reminded me of things RCI no longer does that I miss. I loved the flambé presentations they used to have for the Baked Alaska and the Bananas Foster. I know there were probably safety concerns that led to the elimination of these presentations but I do miss them. Hey, that's ok by me...not everyone is going to miss the same things and to be honest, it's not a make or break situation for me either. Yeah, I haven't seen it for years but it hit me as I was seeing the pictures that I actually hadn't seen it in that long. I think because it was my first cruise, it made it seem more special. Also had baked potatoes most nights. And really nice prizes for participating in or winning games? I won a nice metal ashtray which I still use as a catchall on my dresser plus a set of coasters with the logo in the center. Anyone remember skeet shooting and driving golf balls from the deck? Did that on my first cruise. The horse races were a fun thing now they seem to be a revenue generator. Now you have to first buy a horse. Don't forget theme nights in the dining room where the waiters wore a different style each night to represent the theme. On the Nordic Prince they even had window shades for each theme night with a different 'view' of whichever country was being featured. Captain's cocktail and welcome back parties had cavier and good drinks. You could buy a bottle of liquor in the ships store and for $9 or $10 extra take it to your room for the whole cruise. Oh well, cruising is not the only thing that has changed over the years whether I like it or not. Just being nostalgic for 'the good ole days'. I honestly can't remember the last time they served it but it was several years ago...maybe 2007? I haven't seen it since that second time it was served. I definitely have had the cherries jubalee but I never had it flambéed on the few occasions I've had it. It is OK to have waiters dance at Johnny Rockets, but I associate the MDR with more decorum. What we do the last night is hand out the tips early in the meal and skedaddle without dessert as soon as we can to avoid the waiter parade. I remember when I had a 32 inch waist and was a "10" and could run 5 miles a day. Now I have a 36 inch waist and walk. Hopefully my wife still thinks I am a "10" at 48 yrs old I dont greive the good ole days.............those days are still here. just different. His whole arm went up in flames; he was absent for several days and then came back the last day or two, quite heavily bandaged. It was pretty horrifying. But I still miss those presentations! I would never flambé in the public spaces, but if I choose to flambé on my own, private balcony, with the booze from my rum-runner, that's my business. Not necessarily table-side, but there were stations with one person making (on different nights) cherries jubilee, bananas foster, and crepes suzette. They also had real flames for the Baked Alaska. We really liked these desserts but there was often a strong smell of burning sterno/burning sugar on these nights that was a little off-putting for us, since we were near the station! I don't flambé however as long as it's not illegal, they should allow it somewhere on the ship.
