Along with Drake's Passage, at the tip of South America, it's pretty much agreed that the Tasman Sea can be terribly rough. I once asked a ship's captain which area of the world he disliked the most and he replied the Tasman Sea because it's usually a rough ride. Remember in that part of the world, their seasons are opposite of North America. So, most cruises are usually November through April.

BTW, for future posts here, in the subject area, don't put in your screen name bgp. For this post you could have written "Tasman Sea". That way people will have some idea of what you're asking.

For us, crossing the Tasman Sea was the most rough patch of water we have ever sailed through, including the North Sea. We did that in January 2010 out of Sydney. Our ship, the Volendam, was really pitching a lot for several hours, just as the Captain had warned us as we were clearing Sydney Harbor. Maybe others have had a different experience. Smooth sailing to you! :)

This happens enough on this baord that I suspect a blank thread title is given the username of the thread's original poster. Perhaps the poster didn't notice that they needed to give the thread a title.

On the other hand, for us, crossing the Tasman was not rough at all. The sea was smooth as glass, with almost no swell.

The cruises prior to ours and after ours experienced rough seas.

The Tasman is notorious for being rough . It is also unpredictable.

There is just no way to know what conditions you will meet. Take medications against seasickness and be pleasantly surprised if you have a smooth crossing.

As other posters have said, the Australia/ NZ cruises go during the southern summer, November to April.

Schools downunder re-commence at the beginning of February, after their long break. So, sailing after the first week in February should limit the number of children on board.
