Athens -- Athens Walking Tour

We've got a stop in Athens on our upcoming cruise (obviously...or I wouldn't be here...) I'm looking at Athens Walking Tours instead of booking with the Cruiseline.

They have 2 options as far as meeting up with the tour. You can either purchase a transfer for 35 Euros/person OR take the metro to meet with them. How easy would it be to get from the port to the Syntagma Metro Station?

While I'm at it, any other tour companies we should be looking at? We're really interested in all the basic tourist stuff.

Hello from Barcelona.

It is very easy to go by metro to Athens from the port of Piraeus and is much easier to go by bus. You can move up the bay door and takes you to downtown Athens.

Greetings.

Edu and Montse.

Athens Walking Tours are very good for a general introduction to ancient Athens. Context offers more in-depth tours but it may be more than you want or need for a first visit.

To get to Syntagma is easy from the port. You will take the green line (part of the metro but really an electric train) to Monastiraki station, then transfer to the Blue metro line to Syntagma, which is the next stop.

Here is a good metro map of Athens: http://www.athens-greece.us/athens-maps-greece/athens-metro-map.asp

Walking to the metro station from the port takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on where your ship docks. There is a sidewalk and it's pretty easy, as long as you keep the water on your left. After you pass all the ferry piers, you'll see an overhead walkway (and escalator) that leads across the main street and to the metro stop.

Here is a map of Piraeus port; cruise ships usually dock around the E10 area on the map (or perhaps it's even the next pier to the left, unnumbered....): http://www.greeklandscapes.com/images/maps/piraeus/piraeus-map-3.jpg
