Absolutely! If it was affordable! If you drop the reactor in water the radiation cannot travel through 15' of still water. DH was on a nuclear powered air craft carrier and never felt safer!

Not in our lifetimes as nuclear powered ship too expensive to build.

don't be so sure in that statement.

there are a lot of new developments, such as the toshiba 4S:

i'm confident that in my lifetime what we're accustomed to is going to be as different, as the concept and capacity of the internet 20 years ago...

nuclear powered cruise ship??

We already have nuclear ships and subs... why not a cruise ship?

I would sail on one without hesitation.

Public perception has always been suspect of nuclear powered vessels which is why they aren't already mainstream. Public perception was just starting to come around when Japan got hit with the tsunami, but the tidal waves of public fear over Japan's nuclear reactors will stifle any chance of seeing more nuclear powered vessels any time soon.

Japan was hit by the "perfect storm". The nuclear power plants were meant to survive the earthquake. The addition of the tsunami was not in the cards. Even with that, what are they using, water! Worst case scenario, they dump the reactor into the ocean.

Nope. Cruise lines, being a for profit business, may have a tendency to cut some corners on operating the powerplant (think MDR quality lately). If you think the Splendor sitaution was bad, think of a megaship off the coast with a melting core. Ya think any rescue boats are coming to save ya?

'off the coast' is the best place to have a melting core. Immediate access to cooling water and nothing but water to drop into if the hull is breached. Rescue boats might be leery, but rescue would be safer than on land.

LoveMyBoxer,

There's a lot of worst case scenarios that have to be considered when given the geography of Japan. Volcanic islands tend to have comparatively weak and thin crust layers before magma is encountered. Magma will solve the nuclear issue in a very quick fashion, but it will do so by spewing everything above it into the atmosphere. It's interesting to consider that environmentalists hell bent on stopping fosil fuels such as coal and gas from being used for energy and instead favor nuclear would get to see nuclear energy completely reverse global warming in a very short time frame. If it happens, I hope we have seen the last of the tree huggers.
