lssg Posted April 10, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 10, 2011 We are flying into LAX the night before our cruise leaves from San Diego...is renting a car the cheapest way to get from LAX to San Diego? Is there a rental car company close to the San Diego Port where we can drop a car off before our cruise & rent a car to return to LAX when our cruise ends? will there be an additional fee for picking up and dropping off at different locations for the car? Our return flight home leaves the same day the cruise comes in but at 11 pm at night...any suggestions or comments or answers would be appreciated...thanks

Most likely. Is there a rental car company close to the San Diego Port where we can drop a car off before our cruise & rent a car to return to LAX when our cruise ends? The airport rental dropoff isn't far away- it is actually a walkable distance from the port. will there be an additional fee for picking up and dropping off at different locations for the car? Depends on the rental agency Our return flight home leaves the same day the cruise comes in but at 11 pm at night...any suggestions or comments or answers would be appreciated...thanks Curious why you aren't flying into San Diego. It looks like a bus is less than a rental car. Check out Greyhound's schedule and see if it works for you. The train is a little more than the bus, but might be less than a rental car. However, while the train station and the cruise port in San Diego are next door neighbors, that is not true for LAX and Union Station (Los Angeles' train station). The extra cost and time of getting from/to LAX and Union Station makes this less than desirable verse renting a car. Lindbergh Field (aka San Diego International Airport) is also very close to the cruise port. Since both LAX and SAN are major airports, both will have all the major rental car offices nearby. Cruisin' Chick Posted April 10, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 10, 2011 Plus some rental agencies don't do one-way rentals. And some of the ones that do, don't allow from all of their locations.

Make sure if you are looking at taking the train that you go from Union Station to San Diego station (SAN). Rates are about $30/person, 1 way. I think the cheapest option might be to rent a car. lssg Posted April 11, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted April 11, 2011 the airline we are taking doesn't fly into San diego, so we have to fly into LAX...the train sounds interesting...I will compare prices for renting a car or taking the train
Semi Retired Posted April 16, 2011 #7 Share Posted April 16, 2011 We just take the ships transfer bus to the ship. When we have a late flight home, we book a short San Diego ship tour and then it drops you off at the airport around 3-5 pm. (depending on which tour)

Rare PatriciaF Posted April 16, 2011 #9 Share Posted April 16, 2011 I think a car rental would be the best value--no worrying about making the train or the bus. The San Diego Airport is near the port. It should be about a 2 1/2 hour drive from LAX to San Diego unless you are doing it in rush hour--but you would be in the car pool lane most of the trip and again the traffic once you get to south Orange County.
