Barcelona Food/Wine Emporium: Sounds Interesting!!??

From the Sunday New York Times travel section for tomorrow, they have this headline: "Europe in 15 Perfect Gifts, All Under $100" with these highlights: "VILA VINITECA: Since opening this specialty food shop (Argullers 9; vilaviniteca.es) in 1932, three generations of the Vila family have played as integral a part of Barcelona’s gastronomic scene as any celebrity chef. Today, the brother and sister team of Quim and Eva Vila keep the city’s restaurateurs and amateur gastronomes and oenophiles up to speed. Quim’s wine shop stocks some 7,500 wines, and local sommeliers consider him an authority on Catalan vintages. Since it was renovated in 2005, the adjacent food shop has added a few tables among the displays of jams, olives oils, cheeses and other gourmet products."

This story also notes: "For about 70 euros (about $97) you can pack up a complete meal of savory Catalan charcuterie, some Serra Ferran extra virgin olive oil, a can of Querida Carmen’s Arroz Negro (“black rice” with seafood and squid ink) and exquisite Xavier Mor chocolates for dessert, as well as a bottle of bubbly L’O de L’Origan cava, and take a truly authentic taste of Barcelona to someone back home."

For our upcoming visits in June before and after our cruise, this place sounds interesting. Its location is fairly handy, roughly between our hotel where we are staying next to the historic Cathedral and the harbor area. For checking on a Google.com map, their exact location is Agullers 7. 08003 Barcelona. Any reactions or word from those who have visited here?

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Check with US Customs about what you are allowed to bring into the US first before you start buying foods.

Excellent point on Customs and what you can and cannot take back. Personally, I like to visit these stores mainly for looking, ideas and interesting pictures. Here's the link to the full New York Times story with these different shopping places in Europe.

THANKS for the nice comments and wishes. Yes, will plan to take lots of pictures! Having been there in 1998 for about two days, we've got some of the "basics" down from visiting this great and charming city. Looking forward to the time there both before our cruise and after our return to the port on June 19 before flying out mid-day on June 20. Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
