Veendam's "Nose Job"

Aim1

Recommended Posts

The reassuring factor is that the ship came out the other end of the storm with just some big dents on the bow.

On my cruise on the Veendam this past January, there was an area of deck roped off on the bow where there had been some damage from the storm in December. You could see a piece of the deck had a crack in it, and a few boards were pulled up out of the deck.

Worried now........... Sailing round Cape Horn on Veendam in November......

We did it last year, and the seas were nothing like that. Rainy, yes. Chilly, yes. Bouncy, yes. But nothing like that. (PGFWABF!)

Don't worry about the seas. We did it in 2009 and, although it was rough, and there was some ship damage, we were never in any danger. Just take some sea sickness medication (I recommend Meclizine, which is Bonine) if your doctor approves. Just remember to take it at least an hour before the seas are becoming rough---usually the Captain will announce the approximate time. Be careful about drinking alcohol while taking the medication.

The seas surrounding Chile can be challenging because of the intersecting of different currents. Cape Horn and the Drake's Passage are also notoriously rough, although sometimes Drake's Passage is so calm it is nicknamed "Drake's Lake." But think of it as an accomplishment! You sailed it and survived!
