truchattycathy Posted April 22, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 22, 2011 Has anyone stayed at Quality Inn & Suites in Galveston on Seawall Blvd. recently? I need a hotel for one night before the cruise on New Years Eve. Most of the hotels are either requiring a two night stay for that night or have jacked up their prices to more than double for the night. I don't mind a cheap hotel, just need a little feedback on this one. Thanks!
Karen_N Posted April 22, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 22, 2011 Check out Tripadvisor. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g55879-d568117-Reviews-Quality_Inn_Suites_Galveston-Galveston_Galveston_Island_Texas.html It is rate quite highly. I have booked 4 rooms for Dec 31st. Sure hope it is okay. Karen

Mekamax Posted April 23, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 23, 2011 It is not a 4 star hotel but it is our getaway hotel. Nice, clean and great service. Indoor pool that is locked for only guests. Get a room on the right side of the hotel when facing the hotel (left side when looking at the beach). Better views of the Gulf. Balconies on all rooms. Also do not book the one queen bed room as they are tiny. Book the 2 queen room or king room. The manager is Claudia. Free breakfast is good. Call and book with the hotel directly. They are very nice. This is the one on 61st street. Also there is a beach in front of the hotel. Anything past 61st street (as in 63rd and on) do not have a beach in front from Hurricane Ike just the seawall....Debbie
truchattycathy Posted April 23, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted April 23, 2011 Thanks Debbie. This is just the info I was looking for!! We will book two queens because there will be four of us. I will call today and make my reservations. I love knowing which side to book as well.
firefly333 Posted April 23, 2011 #6 Share Posted April 23, 2011 I stayed there too. I enjoyed it, queen beds. We got a deal for $45 for late Jan. Lots of RED in the decorating. It is set back from the street quite a bit. Balconys not exciting, but it does have balconys where you can see the ocean.
Sarapdot Posted April 23, 2011 #7 Share Posted April 23, 2011 I have this hotel booked for one night in Nov. We are going down to watch the Magic come in for the first time. :D I hope it's a decent hotel but I won't let it bother me if it's not.
Mekamax Posted April 23, 2011 #8 Share Posted April 23, 2011 Ask to see if they have any very front rooms as they are two queen bed rooms and have the balcony that is on the side and front. You can see when looking at the picture of the hotel. I'd also book level 4 or 5 as they have great views. :) I attached a picture of the view from the balcony and some sunset pictures of the beach out front of the hotel. One is looked back at the lights of the Seawall.... :D
truchattycathy Posted April 23, 2011 Author #9 Share Posted April 23, 2011 Thanks!! I booked two rooms, and they are going to double the rates for New Years, so if you have not booked, you better hurry! When I called, the girl said, you want a corner room. I said yes please!!!:) Thanks for all of the input. I love CC!:D Sara, come back and post pics of the Magic please. :p

jigger Posted April 24, 2011 #11 Share Posted April 24, 2011 What bars and restaurants are within walking distance from this Quality Inn ?
Mekamax Posted April 24, 2011 #12 Share Posted April 24, 2011 There is Tortugas Mexican Cantina Restaurant in front of the hotel. Also the Rainforest Cafe, Landry's, and many other restaurants are along the Seawall within walking distance. Down 61st St where the hotel is located is many more restaurants and fast food. Also right next door is Popeyes and McDonalds. There is a fishing pier right in front of the hotel that also serves drinks and would be a neat place as a bar at night. They play Jimmy Buffett music. We usually walk out on the pier at night and enjoy the view and the night time surfers right next to the pier and listen to music but don't actually go into the facility as you have to buy at least $3 to get in and we are just out walking around. I'll attach a nighttime picture here. Also during the day keep a watch out in front of the hotel and we have seen pods of dolphins jumping. Actually from the hotel balcony you can see the fire that shoots out of the Rainforest Cafe roof at night. :) There is a Signature Kroger grocery one hotel away and we shop there for essentials but there is also a Super Walmart about three streets down too. You'll have a great time! So far we have toured the Oil Rig Museum and the Tall Ship Ellissa and the Seaport Museum on the Harborside by where the cruise ships come in. We have toured Seawolf Park on the Seawall side - you cross over a bridge to it and there is a WWII Submarine and Escort Ship and a park there with a fishing pier. Great place to go and explore as the cruise ship sails right past it so you will be able to see it from the water the next day! :) Also Moody Gardens and Schitterbaun (indoor water park) are in Galveston. On the ship when you pull out if you like dolphins watch the sides of the wake and you will probably see dolphins there and as you get out in the ship channel area where other ships pass you watch the bow of the other ships and you are likely to see a dolphin jumping in front of the bow. Awesome view. They have Dolphin Tours on Harborside and there are a lot of dolphins in Galveston. :)
truchattycathy Posted April 25, 2011 Author #13 Share Posted April 25, 2011 Oh thank you so much. I printed this out and put it in my "cruise" folder. It goes in my car with me to Galveston. Great information!!! Thanks again, J:)Y
Mekamax Posted April 26, 2011 #14 Share Posted April 26, 2011 Thank you for responding. Sometimes I wonder if posting is worth it and when you answer it feels like it. Thanks again and I hope you have a great time in Galveston at the end of the year. :)
golfpccc Posted April 26, 2011 #15 Share Posted April 26, 2011 Another fun thing to do--go down to Ferry RD & ride the ferry across to Bolivar. You can either walk on or drive your car on--best part--it is free. Also, don't forget to check out the Strand.
ssb Posted April 26, 2011 #16 Share Posted April 26, 2011 Otherfun things are galveston historical foundation properties(lots of historical properties), moody gardens(lotsactivities), moody mansion, Old town grand opera house, strand area, and post office street, and long walks on Seawall or beach!! Enjoy your stay and cruise! We live in Galveston so ask questions! Register for Galveston.com weeky event mailer
Karen_N Posted April 26, 2011 #17 Share Posted April 26, 2011 Mekamax Thanks for all the information. You have prompted me to seriously consider two days in Galveston prior to our cruise. We have never been before and would really enjoy exploring the area. Just not sure if we will need a car or two, since there will be 8 of us. bertieboop1 Posted May 8, 2011 #19 Share Posted May 8, 2011 we booked this hotel for next Feb, I was wondering as we won't have a car is it easy to get around and see the sights, we booked to stay pre and post cruise!
bmccarthy Posted June 2, 2011 #20 Share Posted June 2, 2011 We are looking to book this hotel for a pre-cruise stay in January. We are planning to take the Super Shuttle to the hotel and won't have a rental car. What is the best/cheapest way to get to the cruise terminal from the hotel? Any restaurant recommendations within walking distance that offer a variety of food and option for indoor/outdoor seating? We love seafood, but my mother-in-law isn't a big fan. Thanks, Beth
beckntom Posted June 3, 2011 #21 Share Posted June 3, 2011 . . . .What is the best/cheapest way to get to the cruise terminal from the hotel? . . . Thanks, Beth In order to compare a more expensive hotel with shuttle to this one without, we called Yellow Cab. They indicated their rate would be $15 from this hotel to the cruise port. I think we'll come out way ahead here. We'll also be there in January, but on the 14th/15th.

beckntom Posted June 3, 2011 #23 Share Posted June 3, 2011 Becky - Thanks! Do you know if that was per person or total? Thanks, Beth It was total, but my husband said he did mention there would be two of us (so we're assuming a sedan, not necessarily a minivan). You're welcome. :-)
