crusing on fantasy may 4 with low expectations

Recommended Posts

Based on member reviews and some recent board comments, I have lowered my expectations for our upcoming fantasy cruise. I expect to find an older, small ship that smells like stale cigarette smoke, mediocre food and entertainment, lots of children around, no lounge chairs available 9-5, a gas mask needed in the casino, and many passengers who refuse to adhere to the ship's dress code for the MDR. I hope I'm wrong. I'll let you know.

While I can appreciate that you may enjoy cruises that are more ... sedated, or maybe more elegant ... I find it hard to believe that the only reviews and comments you have read concerning the Fantasy would lead you to believe it is so horrid.

The age and size of any ship can easily be found and should be considered before booking a cruise if this is of importance to you. As for the "stale cigarette smoke" that supposedly taints all of the Carnival Fantasy, that is hard to believe. Ask any smoker, there are more non smoking areas then smoking. I have been on the Fantasy a couple of times and can honestly say that there was not a "stale" anything smell and I am not a smoker. I stopped at the casino several times as well and smoke was not an issue, granted, there will be those that smoke, but not to the point of tainting the cruise or casino, in my opinion.

Food was great, service was even better. Dress code per the Carnival website is ...

Both dress codes for the dining rooms are described below.

Cruise Casual Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Sport slacks, khakis, jeans (no cut-offs), dress shorts (long), collared sport shirts; Ladies - Casual dresses, casual skirts or pants and blouses, summer dresses, Capri pants, dress shorts, jeans (no cut-offs).

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Casual dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, basketball shorts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men and baseball hats.

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too!

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats.

I found that most if not all persons were dressed as stated above, however, their attire did not influence my enjoyment of the cruise, as I did not cruise to judge others, but rather to enjoy myself and my family.

While I am sure there will be things you will compare to Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity in a negative and possibly a positive manner, what I really hope, is that you go and just enjoy yourself. Forget the reviews, forget the expectations, other then, you are on vacation, you do not have to cook, clean, drive or work and there is beautiful water and ports to be seen.

SoccerATAmom - We're in Kentucky too and and we will also be on the Fantasy 7/23 for a b-day/anniversary cruise. Our first time on this ship. From everything we've read, the reports of heavy smoking in the lounges on the Fantasy is the only thing that worries us. We have cruised twice from Miami, but being from Central Kentucky and are excited about the prospect of a drivable port! We are sailing with our children on the Fascination from Jax in Oct., so we will have a chance to compare these two Fantasy Class ships.

How ironic! We will be on the 7/23 Fantasy cruise celebrating a 40th birthday with a relative. Looking forward to a good time, and I hope the OP has a great time & repots back here.

I've spoken to three people who have cruised Fantasy at 3 different times & they all loved it. I CAN NOT WAIT!
