billys mom Posted May 16, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2011 We are not smokers, I hate the smell of smoke and will be cruising with my asthmatic son. I was wondering if smoking is allowed in the cabins because I would hate to get to my cabin and smell stale smoke from a previous cruiser. We will be in an outside cabin on the Jewel in August. Planer's Edge Posted May 16, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2011 A search on this subject would have given you a wealth of information since this topic comes up quite frequently and usually turns hostile. The stewards have amazing stuff to clean rooms between passengers and I have not witnessed cigarette smell from previous passengers in any of the cabins we have had. PE Here we go again.
camz Posted May 16, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 16, 2011 It is true that this is a topic that gets pretty sketchy and very hostile! I have been on 5 NCL cruises within the past few years and I have not had a problem with the stale smell of cigarette smoke in the cabin. This would also be problematic with me as well, as I tend to get asthma and cigarette smoke is usally the culprit. Here's wishing you success with this very irratating problem. :D
Rare sparks1093 Posted May 16, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 16, 2011 We traveled with our asthmatic son, DW has asthma and both DW and I are former smokers and do tend to notice it. We did not smell cigarettes in either cabin (yes, it is allowed). If you check in and smell cigarette smoke notify the steward immediately and they will work their magic (you won't have access to the room while they are cleaning it). monteman Posted May 16, 2011 #5 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Never smelled it in the cabins we have been in. Sometimes have smelled it in portions of the hallway.
emcelh Posted May 16, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Another vote for "don't worry about it". Our cabins have always smelled fresh and clean and I'm sure that, at some time, someone must have smoked in them. The smell of stale smoke isn't a health issue for us but it is unpleasant. I'm also an ex-smoker and there was a time when I wouldn't have noticed. Now I know what my house must have smelled like.
mtwingcpa Posted May 16, 2011 #7 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Like others, I have never encountered the smell of smoke INSIDE my cabin. But I have often encountered it on my balcony or in the cabin-deck hallways. :-(

Love Overboard Posted May 16, 2011 #9 Share Posted May 16, 2011 Stale smoke is not an issue but what is is when you have adjoining cabins and there are smokers on the otherside. Luckily when it happened we had a roll of duck tape and sealed the door at bottom to the floor but that wasn't good enough so we sealed the entire door frame which solved the problem. Since then we never book an adjoining cabin.

Yes, smoking is allowed in cabins. Have health issues with cigarette smoke (and hate the smell too) and cruised twice on The Star two years ago. Smoke was not a problem. Never smelt it in our cabin and the only area that was a problem was around the casino - so we simply avoided it. We were close to elevators/stairs so didn't walk down cabin corridors very much to notice if there was smoke in the corridors. You will find people smoke on outside decks but you can probably avoid most of that too. As you don't have a balcony you won't have a problem with the smoke from them (we had to retreat inside our cabin quite a few times). Have fun. I love NCL.
