We are on Ventura on friday and our port stops are Vigo ,Lisbon , Bilbao and Brest , we dont book excursions as we tend to do our own thing , other cruises we have done we sometimes got off the ship just to see what was close to the port ,but never ventured too far ,some ports were within walking distance of things to see ,others were literaly ports with nothing around or close by , seeing as we would be walking any information on what is nearby to these ports would be appreciated , many thanks :)

Vigo is easily walkable if a bit hilly the further you walk from the port. Bit uninspiring though IMHO. There is a shopping mall on the quayside. In Lisbon its probably better to take the ships shuttle or walk out of the docks onto the main road and virtually all buses going from left to right head into Lisbon centre in about 8 mins. I cannot think of anything walkable but when in the centre its a good place to walkaround Cant answer re the other 2 ports sorry.

Bilbao you can walk off at the port to a seaside are with a beach and a long prom. Bilbao is abou 45 minutes by free shuttle and well worth a visit in particular the Guggenheim.

I agree about Brest, we went on a trip to Quimprer which was very nice.

Lie the OP, we usually get off and explore rather than taking an organised tour.

In Vigo, we walked up to the highest point to get a view of the town. Weather not too good. A few nice shops to look around.

In Lisbon, there was a HoHo bus outside the port gates. Very good tour for a reasonable price and of course you can get off wherever you want and get back on again.

In Bilbao, we caught the free shuttle bus into the city. Once there, we explored the old town and eventually found a fenicular railway up the hill where we enjoyed spectacular views of the city. We also had an enjoyable walk along the river and across to the Guggenheim museum back past the shops to the very busy shuttle bus pick up point.

When we docked in Brest, there were workman who seemed to be sand blasting a ship not far from us. The noise was incessant which left us with little choice but to get off. The choice was a trip to an Aquarium or the shuttle bus into town. We did the Aquarium in the morning which was OK but not amazing. After returning to the ship for lunch and the noise, we took the bus into town. We went into the fort and towers on the seafront which were very interesting. After that, we decided to walk into the town centre to get the bus back but it seemed the whole of Brest was subject to roadworks. Nothing else to be done so we caught the shuttle bus back.

I have photos of Bilbao and Brest in this link - https://picasaweb.google.com/gailoswald/IberiaCruiseJune2010#

Enjoy your cruise.
