laiki Posted May 30, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 30, 2011 If any of you very very helpful Vancouver locals could answer my two questions I would greatly appreciate it. Are Discover cards widely accepted in Vancouver? What is the tipping policy (primarily restaurant staff)? Thanks!
Putterdude Posted May 30, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 30, 2011 Discovers program is only now being rolled out in Canada....if you have a a Visa or MC you would be much better off with it. As for tipping, the same as in the US, about 15%. http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9J3GLB80.htm
vbmom87 Posted May 31, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 31, 2011 Back in 2008 my sister couldn't find anyplace to accept the Discover card in Vancouver. Glad to hear from Putterdude that they are starting to be accepted.
LindaKE Posted May 31, 2011 #4 Share Posted May 31, 2011 The Pan Pacific took our Discover Card to hold our reservations. In 2009, we had to use Visa while we were in Canada (other coast).
laiki Posted June 1, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Thank you for all of the input. Am I correct that sales tax is approximately 15%? Also do you you tip most of the same people as you do in the U.S. ie. tour guide, cab driver, porter? Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to make sure I do the right thing. ell52 Posted June 1, 2011 #6 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Our harmonized sales tax (HST) is 12%. And yes, you would tip the same people as in the US.
Dan G Posted June 1, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 1, 2011 I'd caution you to look at your bill before paying. Because a large # of visitors some, but not most, restaraunts will add a 'service charge' especially if you are with 6 people or more so be aware before you pay your bill. Its rare but I've seen it done.
