beach410 Posted June 8, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2011 Have searched the port of call thread and cant find anything at all. Will be staying overnight at a hotel that states its walking distance to downtown on our way down to New Orleans and thought it would be neat to explore. Is there anything to do in downtown Mobile? Can anyone recommend restaurants or sights? We will be arriving around dinner time and not really hanging around much the next day because we want to get to NO early to enjoy our precruise day there, but wondering about the night life, etc in Mobile. thanks! beach410 Posted June 8, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted June 8, 2011 I already did an internet search, couldnt find much and also, I am looking for personal experiences from fellow cruisers. I am thinking it must not be anything like New Orleans, was hoping to find a street that we can stroll on similar to Bourbon. But, thank you! Cruise, J.D. Posted June 8, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 8, 2011 I already did an internet search, couldnt find much and also, I am looking for personal experiences from fellow cruisers. I am thinking it must not be anything like New Orleans, was hoping to find a street that we can stroll on similar to Bourbon. But, thank you! No, you won't find anything like Bourbon street! I suggest going out to dinner at one of the seafood places on the causeway going across the bay. We like the Original Oyster House. There are others. There are some nice views. Just an idea. There are some downtown places too, but I don't know much about them.

Try Original Oyster House on Dauphine ST ( like the main drag). sit at the oyster bar for a treat and the freshest oysters. Chk out Spanish Fort( just to the east) for more restaurants

firefly333 Posted June 8, 2011 #7 Share Posted June 8, 2011 I did the 3rd week of the month?? arts walk on friday night before my cruise one time. The other I went to the Civil War fort that is 300 years old and they have tours from there, there is a free bus type thing that will take you around to see the historic stuff. Right past the exit for downtown is the battleship that they said you can spend a day on its so interesting.
lillian marie Posted June 8, 2011 #8 Share Posted June 8, 2011 There's a great children's museum, a historical museum, a fort to explore and a really neat old bookstore. We enjoyed the architecture too. There are some great restaurants and jazz bars too.

beach410 Posted June 9, 2011 Author #11 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Thanks everyone. WE arent actually spending the day, its just a stopping point to break up our drive to NO from NC. We will have Friday in NO, our cruise departs on Saturday. I just if this was a cool place to hang out for the evening we would crash here. Still debating if we should drive 11.5 hours to make it to Mobile, and have a 2.5 hour drive the next day to NO or make it an easier first day and drive 9.75 hours to Greenville, AL and have a longer drive the next day to NO, I wanted to get to NO as early as possible to enjoy the day, but we could always get up earlier with the 2nd route. Decisions decisions ;)
beach410 Posted June 9, 2011 Author #12 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Maybe we will take a ride to Dauphine ST and check it out.
tropicaledrink Posted June 9, 2011 #13 Share Posted June 9, 2011 There is bar/restaurant called HopJack's and it's on Dauphine St. Very extensive beer list, good pizza, and the best French Fries I have ever had. They do some events there, but I couldn't tell you the schedule. If you have kids, the Exploreum is pretty neat! :)
beach410 Posted June 9, 2011 Author #14 Share Posted June 9, 2011 Unfortunately we wont be getting there until 7pm or so and I am sure we will be tired from driving all day. I was hoping we could find something walking distance from a hotel that we were able to get at a really good price being that my son works for the company. Have deciced to head to Mobile after all and will just wing it, if we dont see anything local to the htoel will head over to Dauphine st. Thanks everyone!
