Cazz Posted June 10, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 10, 2011 Just seen this news article, full link below. " This will come into force on the 1st July, subject to being voted through the council, which is seen as a formality. The cost will be 1 euro per person, per night, per star of category for up to a maximum of 5 nights. In the low season (November to February) a lower tariff is anticipated and non 4 and 5 star hotels on the mainland and smaller islands will be charged less. Residents of Venice, under 10s, hostels and communal accommodation as well as coach drivers and guides travelling with groups will be exempt." http://www.thetravelmagazine.net/i-4424--news-flash-venice-tax-proposed-for-july-1st.html Fortunately for me this year, my two nights in Venice are before the tax. I wouldnt say it would put me off, it would be 16 euro extra for example for our 2 night stay, but it could add up for a family.
KayAnnie Posted June 10, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 10, 2011 They did this earlier this year in Rome, so I am not surprised that Venice is following suit.
riffatsea Posted June 10, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 10, 2011 Most USA cities have hotel tax that can be upwards of 17% of the total cost of your stay. Tourists help pay for city services with these taxes. I think it is just part of the cost of my vacation.
