iqemom Posted June 19, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2011 We are on 9 day which stops at Sydney, Charlottetown, Halifax, Bar Harbor, Boston & Newport... We are no stress travelers & in past in Alaska successfully booked different excursions right at the dock as we came off the ship, of course we are always first off the ship to beat the crowds. Anyone have any experience doing the same at any of the above listed ports? We are open to a lot of walking also if it can be done without tours. I have searched the ports on this board but am now more confused! Thanks so much in advance.
138east Posted June 20, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2011 Boston is easy - no need to book anything. If you like to walk, you would like the Freedom Trail. You can take public transit to the start of the trail and go from there. The Silver Line stops right at the pier - it will take you to South Station where you transfer to the Red Line direction Alewife and go 2 stops to Park St. - the start of the "trail" is there. I can provide more details if you are interested.

138east Posted June 20, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2011 Freedom Trail - http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/ The "T" - www.mbta.com/ Faneuil Hall - http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/ Harborwalk - www.bostonharborwalk.com/ An ambitious day would be to take the "T" to the Boston Common and start the trail. It ends at the Constitution in Charlestown. Take the MBTA water taxi back to Long Wharf and pick up the Harborwalk back to the pier. If you run short of time, you can always take a cab back to the ship.

DMaugle Posted July 30, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 30, 2011 iqemom- You can walk Newport, we did. About 45 min from dock to Mansions via Cliff Walk. There is also a harbor ferry/taxi which costs $10pp with unlimited off/on which would add a nice dimension. They will have excursions at the pier too. Bar Harbor has a lot available right off the ship. Also a nice ocean walk from the pier which ends at the uphill end of the main tourist street. RT about an hour with time for a blueberry soda. Sydney should probably be planned out in advance as there is very little to do/see in Sydney proper,. Charlottetown & Halifax have a lot going on right off the ship. We used Halifaxtaxitours for a trip to Lunenburg and Peggy's Cove. Have fun, it's a great itinerary! DMaugle
Host Caroline Posted July 30, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 30, 2011 Fortress of Louisbourg approx 20(?) miles from Sydney is fascinating IMHO and I believe also a UNESCO site. Uneven terrain in parts but I don't recall being especially "hilly"... you can probably get that from the dock but easier if you plan ahead. Cabot Trail tour isn't good one there due to unpredictable fog that can mar scenic beauty of this area.
Rick02809 Posted August 12, 2011 #8 Share Posted August 12, 2011 Here is a thread that I started regarding Newport. SailBadtheSinner has been the thread's "saviour" since I all but abandoned it. read on, there is a lot of great information from the "locals" regarding Newport and the outlying areas. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1073094 Rick
